Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Well, it closes in a week and to be frank, unless there is a mammoth shocker transfer, the elite talent pool is not getting any bigger. Please ping me when I’m allowed to criticize soon tho! I’d love to come back and do so!
No need wait a week if we don’t fill those spots he deserves some criticism for not having a full roster…

You have to consider Collins likely would've preferred to stay at SLU if money wasn't in the equation. So if Spyre offered him $300k (just a example) and SLU matched that or even came close (even something like $200k) that could've been enough to keep him where he considers to be home. Doesn't mean we got outbid by SLU or Spyre isn't competitive with basketball.

So at this point, you can't blame Spyre for our current shortcomings with zero evidence. It's on the staff until we hear otherwise.
This makes absolutely no sense why would anybody pass up being 100k richer

How does that happen? I thought the coaches would basically give a list of players who they want to Spyre and they’d take care of the rest

Spyre has to make a profit.

Just because the coaches want that certain player, doesn’t mean Spyre is entitled to spend a certain amount of money to get him.

Are they going to spend 2-3 million for a basketball player that’s likely only staying one year with the program compared to a guy like Nico Lamaleava that’ll be with the football team for 3 years the most?

I highly doubt it.

While this is a fair point, I have a hard time believing we can’t outbid Saint Louis on a player that would be very marketable for one season. If we can’t, it’s probably time to pack up the basketball program.

Calipari hasn’t made the tournament twice at UK with stupid talent. We have some dumb fans.
With the retirement of Jay Wright, I think that moves CRB to the fourth highest paid basketball coach in college basketball. That salary comes with expectations, just like any other job. I don't think it's dumb to have those expectations.

My assumption with Spyre and the other NIL bundling companies is that they're not built around profit at all, but are funnels for legitimizing donor money. They're not making business decisions, they're spending the money as the donors intend.

Spyre doesn't seem 100% sure what it is/wants to be yet (evidenced by their revolving door of supporter tiers, for starters), which would be understandable if it weren't an offshoot of A3 Athletics tasked with handling NIL for a college sports juggernaut.

If this year goes bust, Spyre better be hitting moonshots with the '23 recruiting class or a more competent challenger needs to emerge.

Spyre had Collins, Key and Phillips in the bag but Barnes was against how much Phillips was asking and got spooked because of tampering allegations with Collins. If he doesn't change his mindset when it comes to nil deals it will be interesting to see how long it will be before he retires imo.

In the end, the big time donors know the fans will fill Neyland Stadium up even after over 10 years of mediocrity.

Fans have never lost their passion for football. The Ole Miss aftermath should have been a dead give away.

If this is accurate, it pains me to say, Barnes needs to step aside. A few years of this would undo any momentum we’ve gained under his tenure.

Interesting. Any chance things could turn again for either Collins or Philips, or are both definitely gone?

A collective like Spyre is set up for someone somewhere to embezzle a lot of money. Not saying that's happening, just saying it's these types of companies that make it easy for someone to do.
Its cynical to think about but the current climate is perfect to do it. They claim 10% goes to overhead and a portion of that is for organizing events. But how would anyone know that’s true? They operate in a monopoly and purely on passions of a fan base with no expectations on what a realistic return on their money looks like.

Old Man gotta go.

Oh, I haven’t seen that argument before. If he was making a million, people would expect to win. He said it should be “guaranteed.” We said that about football 15 years ago, and that went well. Guarantees and expectations are a bit different. This place has gone to you know where, and I can’t wait for the time at some point in the future where people will realize what this program was under Barnes.

Ive been told we arent allowed to have higher expectations due to his salary base. We should just be happy with what hes doing.

This is why I will continue giving money to the university through football season tickets and will not touch donating for mystery recruits lol

Barnes is 67, pushing 68.

He’ll only coach for 2-3 years the most unless some sort of health issue causes him to retire earlier.

This could be 100% BS.
Could yes, but it is in line with BTO saying Collins was in the bag, I believe he mentioned 200k and it might not have been him, but I believe it was mentioned 700 had been offered to Phillips and he was feeling really good with where we were. It could be BS but its in line with what BTO has been saying, and I believe he mentioned his info was from the Spyre side.
