Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

This is why I will continue giving money to the university through football season tickets and will not touch donating for musters recruits lol
And that’s why I think things would be much better off if the NCAA quit the charade and started paying players straight up. Enter a revenue share agreement.

Oh, I haven’t seen that argument before. If he was making a million, people would expect to win. He said it should be “guaranteed.” We said that about football 15 years ago, and that went well. Guarantees and expectations are a bit different. This place has gone to you know where, and I can’t wait for the time at some point in the future where people will realize what this program was under Barnes.
I remember what football under Fulmer was until it wasn't. The same will be true of Barnes. No one coaches forever. And it's just a fact of life that the higher one's salary, the higher the expectations they face. If CRB missed the tournament a few years in a row, would DW be justified in letting him go?

Could yes, but it is in line with BTO saying Collins was in the bag, I believe he mentioned 200k and it might not have been him, but I believe it was mentioned 700 had been offered to Phillips and he was feeling really good with where we were. It could be BS but its in line with what BTO has been saying, and I believe he mentioned his info was from the Spyre side.
That’s part of the problem though. Someone with inside info from Spyre almost certainly has a bias in that respect. So like I said take w a huge grain of salt

Ive been told we arent allowed to have higher expectations due to his salary base. We should just be happy with what hes doing.
I think YOUR expectations are sometimes too high, lol, but I don't think making the tournament is too high an expectation.

I’m not suggesting that it wasn’t time for Fulmer, but good hires have to be made. Danny White has a good track record, but it’s somewhat of a crap shoot because it will be a midmajor coach or assistant. Grass isn’t always greener. Barnes won’t get fired at UT.

Spyre had Collins, Key and Phillips in the bag but Barnes was against how much Phillips was asking and got spooked because of tampering allegations with Collins. If he doesn't change his mindset when it comes to nil deals it will be interesting to see how long it will be before he retires imo.
Wow. I know Barnes has always been old school but thought he was coming around on how to do business in this league nowadays especially with how he changed the offense. If he is really that picky about NIL then that explains a lot about this offseason.

To your point, I think most rational fans understand that making a NCAAT run is a total crapshoot. That said, you can’t win it if you can’t get there. I see no reason for any P5 program to be happy with a coach if they consistently miss the NCAAT - I know I wouldn’t be and haven’t been in the past.

I doubt Barnes gets fired at UT, and I don't want to see it happen, but I also wouldn't say it's an impossibility.

I will take the “Barnes killed the Collins and Phillips deal” rumor with a grain of salt, but just for the sake of discussion, if FranklinVol is correct, Barnes needs to seriously consider whether this new recruiting paradigm is really for him.
It could be why Jay Wright decided to step aside. He didnt want to put up with this stuff.

I said this earlier.

His style of coaching is for players who want to be pushed hard and become a better player/person.

Now, it seems like kids are only wanting hand outs or use college as an NBA stepping stone.

Doesn’t mean Barnes is a bad coach. Coaches like him are slowly becoming a dying breed.

Izzo, Huggins, and Frank Martin are probably in the same category.

I find it extremely hypocritical though that these "old school coaches" that make millions off the game are supposedly opposed to players cashing in.

I would be absolutely floored if Barnes in any way discouraged NiL in whatever amount the market was willing to bear for a player. In Knoxville that market for a basketball player is different than a high level football player but ZZ is making quite a nice living here. Fulky, KC etc the NiL money was flowing into the program this season. I can't even conceive of a reason Barnes would supposedly veto or try to cap an amount paid to a recruit. He'd be sabotaging himself and the program for absolutely no reason.

You guys are arguing totally different things. Previous poster said it should be guaranteed every year. Your “not happy if they consistently miss” is a much different standard and totally rational. My expectations are to make the tournament, but I will never say it should be guaranteed because it’s not…at all. Coaches have a dip every now and then. Although it’s funny that ours has made it 26 of 34 times, including at George Mason and Providence.

Wright said he just didn't feel like putting in 100 percent effort in every aspect any more and he and his wife decided it was time to get out and enjoy life. That said, he'll probably recharge a couple of years and end up at Kentucky.

Which is why these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.

None of us knows for sure what’s going on behind closed doors.

Explains the off season.

Truthfully, I believe we should make the tournament every year. That should be an expectation, IMO. That doesn't mean I think CRB should be fired if he misses it one year. But if he missed it multiple years, I think it would be a fair conversation topic.

With AD White running the show at UT I'm not concerned when it is time to replace CRB.
