Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Absolutely stupid to pay a 1 & done more than they'd make as a non lottery pick in the NBA.

NBA Rookie Scale - RealGM

Seems like the 1st year contracts after top 5 picks are below $5 million a year. I think the most I'd give (if I had unlimited funds and could just pay a player straight up) would cap around $3 million for a season, and that would still be very rare.

Professional contracts are still based on games played and if players aren't playing they aren't making as much...not sure if these college deals work that way. The QB that went to Ohio State and has now transferred to Texas for example, never played a snap and rumor was he made over a million last year.

Edit: And NBA is 82 regular season games...so if you just based it on games played. $5 million is basically 61k a game, and at the college level for 35 games you'd be at $2.135 million.

As long as that supply is reasonable, yes. Obviously we aren’t giving one player 25 million dollars.

The fact that you think 25 million dollars for one year is where the line should be drawn (but not before then lol) means you are a bit out of touch, Dal.

The majority of NBA players not making that. No high school student should be making 10+ million. I think 2 million for Tschiebwe (the reigning NPOY) is probably where the line is going to be drawn for an AAV.

I think he is. If Bismack Biyombo can have a 10 year career in the NBA then I think Tshiebwe can too. The NBA will love his rebounding abilities. He won't be a star but a solid role players a floor for years to come.
I think so, too. He isn't likely to be a 1st-rounder, which is why UK can sway him to come back for $2 mil. I said it a week or so, ago, that he is the perfect college player. A 4-yr guy who became absolutely dominant as an upperclassman but doesn't fit exactly what the NBA wants, so he's no real threat to jump to the draft early. Tennessee had a similar version of him in Grant Williams. I realize that GW left a year early and was a 1st-rounder, so it isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, necessarily, but Grant gave Tennessee three solid years because he wasn't a 1 or 2-and-done player because of a questionable NBA profile. And who knows, Tennessee likely could have talked him into coming back for his senior year had NIL been a thing, then, similar to how UK swayed Oscar back.

Those are the kinds of kids who are a collegiate goldmine. Even more rare and tougher to unearth and land than the 5* kid who is looking to bolt for NBA riches at the first opportunity. I love Kennedy Chandler, but if you gave me the choice of three years of Grant Williams, or four years of Chris Lofton over one year of Kennedy Chandler, I'd take GW and Lofton 11 times out of 10.

Just for fun, say you’re in charge of NIL. What’s the most you’d pay for Hunter/Smith/Philips?
I’d gladly distribute 35M between them, and would probably go as high as 45M.

So I'll throw in a realistic number that also SHOULD land all 3 without issue. And this number is for 1 year for all 3.

$2.5 million, split it however it needs to be split...but with what we return none of those 3 are even guaranteed to be day 1 starters and who knows if they play every game and you get 25+ minutes out of them.

He’ll struggle against more versatile big men who can spread the floor but he could be a decent rebounder averaging 10-12 points a game.

I believe Grant would have stayed another year with a similar NIL to what Oscar got though.

I think there was a shot. Even though he was comfortably drafted in the 1st round, it isn't like he was considered a sure-fire 1st round guy. His decision seemed like a bit of a gamble, at the time, but he likely had assurances from at least one team that they'd take him if he was there when they picked.

In the end, it worked out, and he is now one year closer to that 2nd contract, which is life-altering money. He bet on himself and worked his butt off, so good on him.

I never said 25 should be the line lol I said the most I would do would be 45m for the three, which would be 15m a piece, which if you think can win you national championship, is 100% worth it.

To me, giving a one year basketball player 5 million is beyond my comprehension.
Well, I can’t comprehend giving a quarterback 8 million when we can’t even take care of our own players on roster apparently. JJJ is allegedly making high six figures. Think about that.

What is JJJ’s NIL gig? I recall Fulky doing Pal’s and ZZZ doing Krystal. Don’t recall seeing JJJ doing anything like those

I believe the structure is a maximum of $2mm/year for Iamaleava, which is also incredibly high for a guy with no collegiate playing experience but seems like an effort on behalf of Tennessee and Spyre to make a big NIL splash.

I have no idea how well it will pan out/what the ceiling is, nor do I know how it plays into Spyre's apparent $30/$40mm NIL "budget" since it's such a unique case, but if the 2+ year 5* QB of Tennessee's football team is capping out at $2mm I don't see any world in which a player on the basketball team who's all but guaranteed to be gone in a year (and, if they're not, it's more likely that they're a colossal bust than sticking around because they love UT) is going to command 2.5 times that amount.

You wouldn’t pay 10 million a player if you knew it put you right in the conversation for a national championship?
We already have been in that conversation, so have other teams without paying $10m a player, it’s not necessary or beneficial. How much money do you think a good program brings in?
