Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

The Hunter to Kansas information came from a Gonzaga group chat with some insiders over there, so obviously a grain of salt there. They had heard rumors of a significant NIL package being created for him at KU. For the poster asking about him starting in front of Harris, I wouldnt be worried about that at all. He's a better talent than Harris, and there's enough ball to go around in that backcourt with Ogbaji and Martin leaving.

The Gonzaga guys didn't seem too confident in him coming to GU even with a campus visit. Seems like Gonzaga may be frontrunning for Efton Reid and Grant Sherfield. So many NBA decisions to be made for that roster, which is causing all the delay in these transfer decisions.

I would love to get Hunter. Not as big on the other PG options mentioned. No matter what, I think we have a solid team next season. I'm just hoping for more than solid.

Staff talked to McCullar yesterday. I seem to be one of one who would be excited about picking him up. He’s a monster on defense and a great team player.

With McCullar being a wing, does staff talking to him mean we feel less confident in Phillips now? Or is this just the staff reaching out to do their due diligence in case we do get a no?

I want Tennessee to be the first university to win NCs in football, basketball, and baseball in the same season....

It's a goal.
Florida is the closest that comes to mind when they nearly held all 3 titles back in 2005-2006.

They were the CWS runner-up in spring 2005, then won the NCAA Basketball title in Spring of 2006, and the BCS football title in fall of 2006.

My knowledge goes to exactly to the depth of “we talked to him”. With four spots open, I don’t think it says anything about Phillips, but that’s just a guess.

Personally I'd have McCullar as a take over a few other names. 6'6" rebounds and plays great defense. He's versatile like JJJ as well. With us losing Q & Powell, and even Bailey to an extent we don't have very much size in the guard group.

I still think you want to add a true PG. But a guy like McCullar gives us a lot more freedom with the roster. As pointed out he could play the 2 or 3 and him at the 3 with JJJ at the 4 allows us to play small ball without getting too small.

Well, I can’t comprehend giving a quarterback 8 million when we can’t even take care of our own players on roster apparently. JJJ is allegedly making high six figures. Think about that.
You do realize that football pays the bills right? Attendance and interest in football is all important to the school. I love basketball but you have to realize who drives the bus these days. It’s just natural that the football stars are going to get more money. Just the way it is.

McCullar would instantly be one of our best defenders if we picked him up. Question would be how much he could produce on offense, but I like whoever said he's basically another JJJ. Would make our small ball lineup pretty potent and versatile.

Would love to see who in the country is paying $10m+/year for basketball players? $5m+?
The word was that Duren and Bates got “six figure deals” from Memphis and they were as highly ranked as they come. It wasn’t “millions” according to reports. And it appears that Memphis outbid the big dogs for those two. So I’m thinking these $5 to $10 million figures for a basketball player are erroneous. It’s probably going to increase but not to those levels. Especially for a one and done 5 star.

At this point sounds like:

PG: Tyrese Hunter/Isaac Likekele/John Michael-Wright

Off ball: Julian Phillips/Malachi Smith/Kevin McCullar

Post: Tobe Awaka

Mostly quoting this so people see who the main names are...I added McCullar.

Of those names I'll throw out 2 names I think are very likely going to end up here, and this is mostly tea leave reading and speculation. I don't actually know any insiders etc.

Malachi Smith & Tobe Awaka

15 million a piece is not worth a championship to anyone seriously involved with NIL or the university of Tennessee, I can promise you that. Just for perspective on this, UT MBB brought in less than 10m last year. Football brought in around 60m. I know that money is not going to NIL, but just think about that for a sec and consider that, along with the fact that the average NBA salary is around 7.5m per year.
And UT basketball is probably one of fewer than 20 schools that makes money on that sport. The rest are subsidized by football.
