Tennessee will have a great season in 2017/2018

I believe the Lady Vols will play more as a TEAM this season, which will be a refreshing change.

Depth will be a problem.

The four freshmen will have a big learning curve in adjusting to big time college basketball, no matter how talented they were in high school. How many of the four freshmen will turn out to be above average college basketball players?

Well, lets hope all 4 turn out to be above average basketball players, bc if not, the next few seasons could get ugly

There is NO reason why one or more of these highly rated freshman can not develop into all americans.

Holly has coached several highly rated players out of hs including, burdick, massengale, harrison, graves, deshields, nared, russell, reynolds, middleton among others, but none have gained or come close to any kind of all american status. Is this a player development issue, or is tennessee just not recruiting the right players? Who knows, but with this amount of talent still coming thru the program, its almost inconceivable that holly hasnt had an all american yet. Hopefully this class will change that, or nared, russell will have a all american breakout year..we shall see

I know that Diamond and Te'a have been tagged as the scapegoats for Holly's coaching woes, but the signature wins they had during the HW era came because Diamond came to play on both ends of the floor.

Pretend all you want that she was a detriment to the team, but they don't beat SC or ND without DD.

There is no denying her talent, but DD was a detriment to the chemistry of the team.

We will see. We have more talent than almost every team we play every season. We see what the results have been with our roster of AA players.

DD needed a stronger hand.
She was a kid.
A 20-something year old kid.
Kids have to have guidance or they get in trouble.

...

I am going to try to find 14 just like her for next year

Well you go ahead and do that. Lack of guidance and her getting in trouble was not the issue.

Boxer, OT I know, but we lost La Belle Gran Dame. I posted it in Dogs of VolNation a few days ago.

The Four Horsemen.
I saw this name when I read your post. Thx.

Maybe she was, but was it because she was uncoachable or was it because she played for a coach who couldn't tame her? Remember the sneering on this board when Kaela Davis transferred to SC and boarders were so sure she would ruin team chemistry? We know how that ended, and we will see what happens with Diamond's performance with her international team and how she does next summer in the WNBA.

How Holly's team performs now that they have been purged of the so-called cancer (and I suspect that Te'a will be on her best behavior at SC or will find herself off the team without a moment to waste) will determine if the subpar results the past two years was due to chemistry issues with these players or the fact that Holly's just not that good of a coach.

All I know is that she is not a nice girl and has no integrity. She is a talented athlete, but like all of them, she is one injury away from never playing again. Of course, she is "God's favorite daughter." (self proclaimed)

Time will tell.

Do we have any dangerous shooters?

I think davis, westbrook and hayes are all solid, with davis being the most dangerous from the perimeter. Nared was really good last season on the perimeter, hit some big shots and her points were huge in the SC win.

I am more concerned with the defense. I think westbrook will be steller in that regard. Would have loved to see her and diamond in a full court press. If russell has a weakness in her game, its defense. Meme is pretty solid defensively, but seems to foul a lot. At this level, you have to be pretty good defensively to get any meaningful minutes. I think its what has held dunbar back and it def held middleton back from contributing more.

Im excited to see the freshman, and really curious to see what kk can contribute in the post

Hey small. My sincere condolences. They really become a part of the family, especially when you have young ens who love to play with them, so when they pass on its incredibly difficult. We are considering two golden retriever puppies, one male and one female in additon to our beloved boxer family

Just as a side note, whenever our family is watchinglady vol basketball or football, our boxers get just as excited as we do when tennessee scores lol..my 2 year old son loves it lol

Holly Warlick press conference.

From the sound of this it seems dunbar should be ready to go. Hopefully she has a much much better shooting season..so it seems green is progressing well, but will she be effective and able to contribute much. We saw how jannah tucker was cleared to play, but noticeably still affected from her acl injury

Warlick said yesterday, in what to me was another classic Holly moment, that she wants to run more this year. She seems not to be familiar with our roster. We have no depth AT ALL. Harris is a major project and not going to play much if any, and KK is at least a minor project. She will play some because she has to. Dunbar has not played much over the course of her career and is coming off some foot issues, so I doubt that she's going to get major minutes. That leaves us essentially with a viable roster of 7 players--three of whom are freshman. We have three guards on the team, two of them freshman. We are in no way in a position to be a running, up-tempo team. I'm sure we'll run occasionally--but Russell already logs too many minutes, and has had a problem with 4th quarter fatigue. if we were to try to run a lot she'd be completely worn out by the third quarter. It would be /nice/ to be a true up-tempo team--when is the last time we had a GOOD running team (1986?) but I don't see it happening this year.

When people say not depth you do realize most teams only play 9 or ten players correct. So define depth because if they all contribute then yes she can run

True, but the real run and gun teams (up-tempo), as well as the full court press teams usually sub quite a bit. Take Syracuse for example, they run a very high octane run and gun offense coupled with a stifling full court press. To enable this, they sub often and play like 10 + strong in their rotations. Contrast that to say WA 2 yrs ago when they had effectively a 6, at times 7 player rotation. Their goal was to slow it down, as 4 starters were generally logging 35+ min a game. Both teams / styles made it to the final four 2 years ago, so both can be effective... just got to play to the teams strengths.

You can only run if you can rebound and then push the ball. We didn't do much rebounding last season giving up ultimate possessions to teams on the offensive boards. We lost five or six games last season because teams got three and sometimes 4 attempts per possession. If Holly wants to improve something it is getting on the boards and making teams one and done. When you limit shots they aren't scoring points.

From what I get Holly's 5 starters will be. Evina Westbrook, Anastasia Hayes, Jaime Nared, Cheridene Green, and Mercedes Russell.

I won't complain about that lineup.

I was also pleasantly surprised to hear Holly expects Harris to sub for Mercedes. Should be fun.

I'm surprised MeMe Jackson isn't starting. Not that I think she is better than Evina or Annie, but she is more experienced. I fully expected the freshmen would be starting by the end of the season, but it appears that Holly plans to live or die by their potential from opening day.
