Tennessee will have a great season in 2017/2018

Unfortunately, there is still one major subtraction present....coaching.

It is very difficult to have faith in this coaching staff unless you consider frequent mediocre play and the lack of player development a positive. On paper the talent has been there however it has severely under performed. We can say that we are going to have a great season but based upon what? In the last few years the Lady Vols are descending as a top 10 program. At this point we have to cross our fingers and toes and hope we can turn this thing around. Sooner or later if things continue as is, we just have to get off the Holly train.

I agree and disagree the overall results the past two years have left an agrediously poor taste in any true lady vol fan's mouth! Two seasons ago was crappy but turned around and they made it to the elite 8. Last year you had a team who severely under performed against poorer competition and lost in the second round for the first time! I can't for the life of me figure out why the team was so lackadaisical and could not be amped up. However, I will say I saw player improvement. People say Mercedes was soft but she scored 16 pts a game and grabbed 9 rebounds both severe improvements from previous years. Jamie also made a huge leap as a player and not just points and production but also her killer mentality to knock down clutch shots. I can remember against both ND and Stanford the team not going to DD but Nared to hit the "dagger". Also while we lost to teams we should have beaten we beat 4 top 10 teams last year and 3/4 of the final 4 contestants. That speaks to potential and maybe poor coaching but coaching and player development put them in positions to win those games. Regardless it's frustrating and makes one scratch their head. I am just looking forward to the season and seeing how it unfolds.

I do like the approach that anything less than a Final 4 and a chance at a Natty is a failure I have heard the players say. When I think back I heard Candace Parker and other alumn say that but the team the past couple of years didn't embrace the challenge of getting to a final four but seemed to shy away with no leadership.

From what I get Holly's 5 starters will be. Evina Westbrook, Anastasia Hayes, Jaime Nared, Cheridene Green, and Mercedes Russell.

Evina at the point
Annie at the 2 guard
MeMe Jackson and her experience at the wing /R. Davis
Jamie Nared at the 4 with Kortney & Green helping
Mercedez, Kamera, KK, Green

You'll notice that was my first post.
You can look at me like I'm A graduate transfer.
I know the rules but I'm overwhelmed playing with the big leagues.

I'm surprised MeMe Jackson isn't starting. Not that I think she is better than Evina or Annie, but she is more experienced. I fully expected the freshmen would be starting by the end of the season, but it appears that Holly plans to live or die by their potential from opening day.

Yea, I agree with you. I expected Jackson to start in the backcourt with one of the freshmen to provide some leadership and experience. Will be interesting to see what lineup the coaches settle on.

Jamie need to return to her true position.
This should be your starting lineup.
1. Evina 2.Nasty 3.Jam 4.RD 5. Slim Cede
We are beginning the season playing cupcakes, change up the starting rotation as see fit. We have various players who can play many
position and that's a plus.

I think davis, westbrook and hayes are all solid, with davis being the most dangerous from the perimeter. Nared was really good last season on the perimeter, hit some big shots and her points were huge in the SC win.

I reviewed Nared's stats and girl can shoot. I knew she shot well but she's pretty close to being an elite shooter (38% 3s; 88% FT). Problem is that she only shot ~3 3-pointers per game. This year we need her to shoot at least double the 3-point attempts.

Nared's % inside the arc was not great, only 42%. So maybe we need stop shooting contested mid-range jumpers.

Do you know roughly what percentage the freshman shot in HS?

We don't take, and make, enough threes to be a really potent offensive team--that's been a problem for years and one, natch, unrecognized by Warlick and staff. And I'm pretty sure that will be the case this year now that Middleton--who had an excellent three-point shooting percentage (41 percent or so)--is gone. Players who can shoot the three are /valuable/--and yet our coaches couldn't find a way to best utilize Middleton.

That's been the case with Tennessee's offense going back to the CPS days. The 3 pt shot was an afterthought, and rarely were plays designed to free up shooters, even when there were players like Bjorklund on the team. Inside out!!!!

there's an old coaching adage that says "live by the three die by the three".

Teams can fall in love with it and sometimes it dictates their success or failure. A well-balanced offense is key. A point guard a shooter a small forward who can play pretty much all five positions a power forward and Center...you got those five spots covered you're going to win.

If you notice last year when the girls played they seem to be playing their best when Jordan disperse the ball Diamond played one-on-one moves Jaime cut to the basket and set High pics and high screens Russell gave us a double-double and every now and then would have a shooter to fill the 4th Spot.
