Texas A&M coming to the SEC????

it's really overly complicated. by having a team in the state recruits know they will play near home at least every other year and it creates new fans for the SEC. are they going to start dominating texas for recruits? nope. but i'm sure it will open it up more than currently.

Also, why do people think adding aTm is going to help Tennessee recruit Texas? Can someone explain the logic behind this?

The only reasoning I can think of is the ability to tell kids they'll be able to play a game in their home state. It'll also bring exposure in the area.

Who goes west? Us?

I've heard one example on that one where it was vandy....but who knows noone's quite sure exactly how a realignment would go.....really they could even do something like push ole miss or miss St east if they wanted to

Adding A&M is ok and move AU to the east but no OU. OU is big enough and good enough to go independent IMO.

It may help us get some recruits that would have gone to A&M or even OU, but we won't be stealing many guys from the Horns.

This has been the biggest thing that is overblown about all this that I can think of. Everyone seems to be acting like is the 60s and there's only a few games on TV each week.

It's pretty obvious why they want to join the SEC....

1. Santos commits to VOLS due to them being in the SEC.
2. Texas A&M asks to join the SEC.

I expect this "A&M to the SEC" talk to die down if Santos switches his commitment in the next couple days...which won't happen so I'm calling A&M to the SEC a lock at this point fo sho.

Possibility of a return game at A&M, so recruit can have a homecoming of sorts/play in front of a home crowd.

That means no Tennessee Alabama rivalry

Unless they switch back to two required cross divisional games.....with 7 teams in each division, they're going to have to restructure the 8 conference game system unless they really just want only 1 changing west-east matchup each year (meaning....with home & homes, what 10-12 years for cross-division at each site?)

it's psychological. people act like recruits and parents think rationally. a league with a texas team seems less like foreign territory and therefore is more likely to be considered.

With 7 team divisions, 8 conference games, and 2 permanent games, you would play the same 8 teams each year.

At this point, I'm not really even that interested in what changes there are, as long as Tennessee can still play Alabama every year.

I'm more saying they'll likely have to change or expand it to 9 total conference games, because of the issue of having 6 divisional games plus 1 constant cross-division game creates for an 8 game conference schedule....(10 might also be
a possibility but that might be less accepted or likely)

Sorry I wasn't terribly clearl in that post that the 1st part was a possible change in a newly created system, and the second part was about the problem the current system could have if maintained with a 14 team conference

You are way off on this one.

The Va Tech explosion over the last 15 years has been HUGE. Also keep in mind that over the course of this outstanding run for the Hokies, UVA has been abysmal. There is now an entire generation of Virginians who only know/care about one football program. Sure there are some hold outs that still support the Cavs, but it is a very, very small minority.

I can remember going to Hokie games in the early 90s like you are talking about and walking in no problem at half time. Those days are long gone.

Add to it that academic standards are through the roof thanks to the success of the football program and increased applicants, and Va Tech is real force in that market.

I agree. Add Texas A&M and Va Teach and no one has to move divisions. Plus it adds a nice geographical UT/VT rivalry. I think the talk about a 16 team league is crazy. The SEC is already the best conference in the nation, why do we want to make it that much harder to win the conference? Also, it would be like 10 years between some of the cross-divisional games.

This and there will be more SEC on TV in Texas with A&M games on every Saturday playing other teams. Kids will, therefore, be exposed to these other teams. Some of these kids will not be A&M homers. So, just like you have kids in TN sporting UF apparel, similar things will begin to happen in TX to a larger extent. That would be the hope at least.

I think whatever they do, they're going to have to change the setup to 9 or even 10 conference games a season if they want to have 14 teams

The thing is it wouldn't surprise me all if they didn't. I'm not so sure Slive is thinking of cross divisional rivalries during this discussion.

it was one of the main things in the first expansion. No way it gets dismissed that easy
