That's racist!

I think not winning gold would be a stronger argument for not including her, given that she isn’t one of the best 12

Disagree. @85SugarVol could be the 12th player in drag and this team wins gold.

The only way this team loses is chemistry and we saw what happened last year with USWNT when over the hill players are selected for political and not performance issues....

I wasn't really commenting on likelihood; the post I was responding to was a "what IF we don't win gold." He was saying that not winning would make her exclusion look worse, and I actually think the opposite - it would make it look like we should have left off Clark AND Taurasi and brought Ogunbowale.

Plus, Sugar can play. (I have no idea if that's actually true, but he has good taste in baseball teams)

I understand what you're saying but would offer two things:

1. Women's basketball is popular internationally, and in some countries more than it is here (which is why WNBA players sometimes play overseas in the offseason). Those people will likely already be watching and may already know who Clark is

2. If people in those countries don't know who Clark is, I'm not sure that playing for like 4 minutes once every few games is going to make her into an international phenomenon

Make no mistake, I think she would attract more viewers, but a lot of those may be from within the U.S.
I think everything you just said with regard to international eyeballs is probably right.

But what you quoted was in reference to the 2nd half of his post, not the international angle.

You’re right - Caitlin Clark on Team USA doesn’t grow the international game.

Caitlin Clark on Team USA drives eyeballs and growth in the domestic market here. Which is what absolutely should be one of the goals.

The ultimate goal is a foregone conclusion.

She is. Can’t hold back the hands of time and she’s busted. If she’s the #12 and all things equal then you go with youth.
He’s operating from a warped fantasy world where Team USA needs “experience and toughness” to win this Gold medal 😂

It’s going to be an absolute boat race lol

They should have picked OG. Period. They opened themselves to 2nd guessing by not doing that.....

So if Taurasi and CC are basically equal in ability (just go with it), why wouldn't you put a younger player on the roster to build experience at the Olympic level?
Deference to a legend is probably a huge part of it, right or wrong, as well as leadership/international experience/fewer rookie mistakes/knowing the coach's system and having practiced with these players before.

I would rather have CC on the team than Taurasi, but I don't have a huge problem with it because she hasn't really earned it (and partially because Ogunbowale has much more of a gripe than either one)

I think it’s fine to put Taurasi on the squad for a “combination” of reasons.

Growing the game to new market and new generation > watching DT put ice bags on her knees and back stimulator.

The Women’s romp through Paris is going to be a celebration.
A showcase for women’s basketball on a marquee stage.

And it will be the primary rotation of 8-10 players that delivers the Gold.

There is absolutely room on that roster to celebrate Taurasi.
There is absolutely room on that roster to capitalize on Caitlin.

I'll take your word at it then. I seriously didn't know what condition her body is in but I can understand the pov that team USA would value experience over a younger player maybe not quite ready.

Or perhaps they worry about chemistry and optics and done prayers here are right about there being a resentment toward Clark among established NBA talent.

You saying have them both?

Lol, no it doesn’t. Two different reasons

After all this you still don’t understand the benefit to Women’s Basketball of adding Caitlin Clark to the Women’s USA Basketball Team that will be competing in Prime-Time at the Olympics in Paris, France.

I guess maybe I was wrong. Perhaps you are just this dense.
I can see your point but I also understand going with experience and leadership. I think there is also a certain degree of wanting to steer clear of the Clark/Reese drama and letting some of that play out as they are both likely to be key contributors on future Olympic teams.

I think a lot of this is him objecting to you characterizing his responses as "emotional" FWIW
Looking back at it in retrospect it wasn't the right way to word or handle it.... @85SugarVol I understand your position but poorly tried to offer the counter argument. I wouldn't have a problem with her making the team. I don't have as problem with her exclusion either.

I think she's borderline deserving and would certainly raise profile domestically.

You’re FOS
I didn't think he is. You can't underestimate how valuable chemistry on these national teams is. These teams were decided years ago and those players have been working together, in many cases full time for their national squads.

FWIW I think Clark's biggest flaw in her game right now is just adjusting to the pro game but also her teammates. That takes time.

No I'm operating from the view that the only way the US women could possibly lose is poor team chemistry.

Not that I think Clark is a bad teammate or anything.

All I’m saying is she’s better than a 42 year old DT. It doesn’t bother me at all that Clark didn’t make the team
