Saw on Twitter (can't confirm accuracy):

And yet, no live coverage of the opening ceremonies.

I find this remarkable. Half of the fun of the opening ceremonies is all the surprises that come along with it such as the performers, who will light the torch, etc. By the time it is shown on tape delay later tonight, all of those will be long since out of the bag for just about anyone who doesn't make the conscious decision to stay away from their computer from about 3:00 onward.

Any opening ceremony that includes James Bond and Dark Side of the Moon is cool in my book. Good show by the Brits.

Kazakhstan starts the day off winning gold at the 250km men's cycling road race (Alexandre Vinokourov)

With Columbia getting the silver

I thought it was a columbian that won silver.

Maybe (and if so my bad). I got to it at the end and they were really just focussing on the winner at that point

Edit: you're right. Columbia's Rigoberto Uran was second, with Norway's Alexander Kristoff. US Taylor Phinney was in 4th

Apparently this was a big upset/surprise

Phelps got the 8th lane in the 400m medley final by literally the width of a gnat's ass. I didn't expect him to dominate like he did in Beijing, but this is crazy.

Italian archer hit a 10 on the last shot to beat the Americans by 1 pt and earn gold. Pretty fun to watch actually.

I think the argument that you can slap national flags on any sport and make it interesting is crap. Women's basketball is still bloody unwatchable.

Handball is on NBCSports and it looks like something dreamed up in PE. Awesome.

You mean you aren't looking forward to rooting for the Americans to bring home gold in racewalking this time around?

it's like water polo on gym mats

and,

I know it was just France vs. PRK in women's soccer, but it's not cool to go to a commercial every 5 minutes. You just don't do that.

They are taking commercial breaks as the game is going on? I've never known of any network to do that.
