The 2014 Winter Olympics - Sochi

Wow! Really? Is Sweden supposed to be that good, or are Olympic hockey rankings just arbitrary?

Sweden won all of their pool games in regulation.
USA beat CCCP in overtime SO. therefore, more points to SWE and they are 1 seed.
:hi:

The pool competition was only three games, right? Extremely small sample size.

Do you think the seedings accurately reflect the performance of the teams? Or did Sweden have an easier draw?

Out of curiosity, what is your infatuation with Latvia? Do you have Latvian ancestry?

Watch their WJC team get clobbered by 2 touchdowns a few years ago, and battle to the whistle. Then they hired Ted Nolan to run their program, who I've always liked. Internationally they're massive overachievers, so I root for them

Oh, I gotcha. Some of my wife's folks are Latvian/Lithuanian, so I didn't know if we could swap stories about the old country. Oh well! haha!

Probably a little of both...I have no doubt that the top four teams are in the semi's and that's all that really matters. I had (picked) the US at 3 behind SWE and CAN, but we will see.

They're legitimately proud folks

And they hate the hell out of Germans and Russians, and rightfully so I might add. It's a pity Latvia didn't get to play Russia. Would have been some intense ****.

Actually come to think of it, Finland also hates the **** out of Russia, and rightfully so, so I guess we can't begrudge them for getting the shot at Russia.

On a related note, it's nice to know that the US isn't the only country in the world that people hate like hell. I'd say Russia runs a close second. May even be first, depending upon how long the animosity of those they've oppressed maintains.

The Russians sure aren't making any new friends in Ukraine right now.

No, they are not. While I highly doubt that situation escalates beyond the level of street protests and clashes (at least violence-wise), it is a frightening scenario. Unlike Iraq, Afghanistan, or even Syria, I don't think Russia would hesitate to move in on Ukraine to restore its puppet. What would the US or NATO then do?

Like I said, that's a nightmare scenario. I highly doubt it comes to that.

Okay, back to the Olympics.

The Swedes played the Swiss, Latvia and the Czech's. So not a bad pool

My Grandpa fought for Finland in WW2. He hates the **** out of some Russians. But he's a Swede so he hates most Fins also. Lol.

He lived in Vaasa, where the population is Swedish. But it's in Finland, so he got drafted into the Army

Ah, I see. The Russo-Finnish War, or WWII? Which, in a way, I suppose they're kind of the same thing.

The Winter War in WWII. But yeah, he also fought the Germans also

It's always amazed me how tiny Finland more than held its ground against the Soviets. Fascinating. And thanks for sharing about your grandfather.

You're welcome, the tactics they used were far superior to the Soviets. It also helps to have Simu Hayiha, or however you spell his name.

So these alpine skiing events have really piqued my curiosity. So much so in fact that I figured I might give 2018 a shot. Looked into the price rates at the local ski resorts here in East Tennessee. I was immediately reminded of why I've never been skiing. My Olympic dream will just have to wait until I hit the lottery I guess.

Rich man's sport. Pretty much all of the winter sports are, actually.

Yep. I was thinking the other day how exactly someone gets into the luge, bobsledding, or the skeleton. Where in the hell would you even go to practice? Definitely have to have enough wealth (and I'd even argue leisure) to relocate.

Not nearly as bad if you actually get into it (like other sports which needs special equipment).
