The All Things Cycling Thread

seriously got a good friend who puts bikes together as a hobby. he sold me a dark creek volkscycle. now that ive taken this "family truckster" as i call it, about as far as she'll go. im looking for a low end, very decent rosd bike.

i may be too novice for the "all things cycling thread". u guys throw out some suggestions. and ill hang up and listen. oh, caveat between 300-500.00. i know, when u stop laughing. its an honest question.

if it helps i could buy one from my friend but, id like to get a sharp deal if i could. ive shopped at hearns cycles here in asheville and their "used stock" is retail

craigslist. you should be able to find a good deal in asheville. have your friend help you.

gonna put 100 down on a giant ocr 3 frame and wheels and brakes. prolly needs a new saddle. cant wait, the old japanese family truckster doesnt hold up to ashevilles roads well

If you scour the used markets you might find a nugget.

Riding the same route repeatedly is likely to get boring.

We've got a lot of good biking areas around here, I've heard. What should I expect to have to fork out for a decent-but-not-serious-biking bike? I don't want a $100 Wal-Mart bike if I'm going to get one.

Riding the Roanoke Greenway never gets boring. Lots of natural beauty running around especially in the evenings.

You could find one on Craigslist for $200-500. if I see one I'll post it here for ya.

There's only one route here where I see this. And while I've consequently done it more than I otherwise would, it still would get old day after day.

Just messing with ya. actually our greenway is over 20 miles long & will be 30-40 miles when they are done with it. You can access downtown, great cycling neighborhoods, a spur even climbs a mountain to the parkway. you could ride parts of it every day and create 3-4 really nice routes. the city has done a good job embracing the outdoors & eco-tourism.

I think we were named one of the top bike-friendly city by some organization mostly because of the greenway.

MUPs here aren't good for road bikes at all (compared to pictures I see of other places).

The longest stretch of greenway is less than ten miles and more accurately is three trails cobbled together. Due to all the curves, crossings, tree root bumps, people, and what not, you can't very safely cruise faster than 16-17 m.p.h. for any meaningful distance.

Haha.

103 degrees today. Decided to take the day off of work. Rode 30 miles of singletrack and then 45 miles with the local road racers. Dead.

Found a 2011 Specialized Tarmac Comp for $1,400. Less than 500 miles. Looks in great condition from what I can tell (no scratches etc)

Good deal?
