The All Things Cycling Thread

Over a week of solid rain and flooding then 90+° with 80% humidity and now wifes family visiting from California. when they leave Monday I'm riding if it doesn't rain.

Traditionally, it's somewhat more difficult for me to get motivated to ride in late July/August.

It shouldn't be as bad this year because June was cool and I haven't been riding as much as normal.

65th out of 196 overall. 9th in my age group. I now lead the state championship by 1 point.

In other news, I had a blast racing today. I loved those trails. A mix of everything.

Im riding today come hell or high water

Nice.

I wouldn't sit on that lead.

I'll lose it next week, assuming the 2nd place guy shows up and finishes. He's won every race so far by several minutes. I have just raced more races than him is all. He should really be in cat 2 instead of cat 3. I really want that IL state champion jersey...

Whatever physical issue it is that I've got sure is weird.

On Wednesday I was feeling good enough that I did one of the faster rides I've done in weeks. Yesterday, I forgot to take the A.M. dosage of my twice-a-day drug (prednisone). So this morning my knee is swollen so much that I'm hobbling around.

Really flares up fast.

that sucks. do you know the cause of the injury?

It's not an injury. It's some kind of autoimmune reaction that's causing inflammation/stiffness/swelling in the joints (not just the knees).

If untreated, it gets so that just getting out of bed is painful. The steroids are working well enough to suppress it, but that's not something you want to be taking long term.

Going back to the rheumatologist sooner or later. They have no clue at the doctor's office.

I've had an issue with minor joint inflammation in the past, but it wasn't nearly this severe.

I have some problems like this that are from a combination of previous injuries. I tore my MCL playing football in high school and I was also tripped going down the stairs in high school and bounced on my knees and shins. I have small fragments of my patella floating around in my left knee that I can actually push around with my finger.

My knee will swell up about an hour after a ride and then be good to go again in the morning. If I ride before work I need to wear a knee brace and keep pressure on it.

I'm staring at a 130+ mile ride on Sunday to Iowa City and back. It'll be my most ambitious ride yet, and solo...

Yikes.

130 miles is a long day (I assume). Better hope it's not a windy day.

If it's windy, I'm not doing it.

I did hills last night. Living in the Mississippi River valley means I can start at the end of the city and snake all the way to the other end going up and down hills. It was fun, but hurt.

Thanks.

One thing about ridding with swollen knees, which I've done recently, is that it's forced me to stay seated while climbing more than I usually do.

Since ridding seated is supposedly more efficient, I suppose that's a good habit to get into--though I doubt it will last.

Brother.....I feel for you. I've been dealing with something similar since I was 25. Is this something that just started recently? Which joints are affected?

I had an short-lived outbreak about seven years ago. I took prednisone for a week and it mostly went away.

Thereafter I just had minor on-and-off-type inflammation that wasn't bad enough to effect my activities. I usually didn't even take any NSAIDS,

. . . until this spring when it hit with a vengeance. It can affect all my joints, from neck to feet. The swelling is most visible on the knees.
