The All Things Cycling Thread

I'm thinking about getting into cycling. Looking for an intro bike around $1,000. Trek 1.5, Scott S30 are a couple of bikes I'm considering. Any other ones I should look into?

Avoid the Trek, IMO. The Scott is a good choice. Check out the Specialized Allez, Felt Z95, or Canondale CAAD10. Ride them and see which feels better and buy from a shop that you feel most comfortable in.

What about Fuji?

I don't know a lot about their bikes, other than they sold out quite a while ago. They're probably just catalog bikes* at the $1000 price point.

*A catalog bike is where a company will look through a manufacturer's frame catalog and pick one, spec it, then sell it. Often times they're the same as another brand that's done the same thing and/or of lesser quality. KHS is known to do this a lot as well as ALL bikes from Bikesdirect.com.

This is worse than trying to buy a car

Just ride them and buy the one you like. You live near Chicago, right? You should be able to get your hands on pretty much any brand you want.

Try talking them down a little bit like a car, or get some free stuff. Most shops will give you a deal if you buy accessories with the bike.

Also ask about service plans. Some shops give you 1 free tune up for the first year, others give you 3, our shop gives unlimited tuneups for the first year, and some shops even give lifetime free tuneups. That's a pretty big part of buying a bike is the service you'll get post-purchase.

In all honesty, there's no best brand of bike. You're pretty much buying into a component group and then getting subtle differences in aluminum frame design.

I bought a bike a few months ago. I was overwhelmed too. So what I ultimately ended up doing is going to one good bike shop, where I rode a dozen of their cheap bikes and bought the one I liked best. I spent about $350. Once I've kept at it for a year or two and know more about what I want, then I'll buy a "good" bike and this one will be my beater that I take to the beach. I know enough real riders that I know it's sometimes useful to have a secondary bike around that you don't worry much about. So I figured that I'd just go ahead and buy that one first. Mine is a Raleigh; I'm happy enough with it so far.

In that price range it's best to buy a used one a few years old.
