The All Things Cycling Thread

so I enter this thread seeking advice. I want a bike to start riding around. I'm not wanting to do anything crazy, but something that would ideally be good on the roads, but that I could also handle on all the running trails here at Fort Bragg. I want it for exercise and for transport to and from close distances. I don't want something crappy, but I'm not really up for throwing up four figures either. Any suggestions? I looked through Craigslist, but I had no idea what I was looking for as far as quality goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Because most of the trails down there are sandy, id recommend a rigid or hardtail mountain bike. you can get a nice new one for $700-900 or a more expensive used model in that price range.

$700-$800 is about my max I think, so are there any recommendations I should look for? I'm 5'10, 195. Any brands, specifics to go looking for?

With 4 kids involved in 5-6 different activities I don't have a whole lot of time to ride so my mileage sucks....plus I'm a noob and 45. I'm listed as El Gato in Mt. Juliet, TN

I didn't want anyone that knows me to see my numbers in case they really sucked

Your time probably isn't that bad. But it does help if you can ride more than once or twice a week.

With four kids, I don't know how you even keep sane, much less worry about cycling speeds.

You're not slow. since it's so flat there and your rides are shorter, consider adding some intervals to your rides if you want to get faster. check out Time Crunched Cyclist.

In a mountain bike race are you racing the course for time as opposed to everyone racing at the same time?

In mtb race its more about how well you can ride the trails. Road racing requires team work. when you ride in a group you're faster. however finding people who will do this is tough. even worse is someone who says they will work with you then races off after you've pulled them.
