The All Things Cycling Thread

Wind chills in the low teens, but my padded cycling shorts finally showed up in the mail and I'm eager to try them out. I might set my coldest trek record very early in my cycling career.

I can ride in shorts down to the upper 40Fs, but I do not recommend doing so with wind chills in the teens.

Same here, and I agree. You'd freeze with wind chills like that and get wind burn. Layer up!

I was just interviewed by the local news about the growing popularity of fat bikes here. I HATE CAMERAS.

I rode with multiple layers. The shorts with insulated pants over them, a nike Dri-Fit shirt, a hoodie and a neon yellow reflective windbreaker and a gator neck. Having padded shorts made all the difference in the world!

How popular are they? I don't see any when I'm out riding.

Extremely popular here. We had 60 people show up for Global Fat Bike Day on Dec 7. High of 8° that day. Would have been more if it was a little warmer. We expect over 100 on Feb 15 for a large group ride. They're only super popular where there's snow.

The one with the mustache. I haven't actually watched the segment yet. Won't play on my phone. The other guy is a triathlete and I don't think he's ever ridden a fat bike in his life.

RealFeel™ high of -20° on Monday and -28° on Tuesday. Oughta be fun.

My 23 mm tyres keep me riding all winter long.

Rode yesterday when it was in the upper 20Fs.

Going to be unusually cold Monday and Tuesday. Not sure if I'm going to brave it or not. It will be a moot issue if there's snow on the roads.

Four inches? Holy rolling resistance!

25c tires on 23mm rims is where it's at.

But yeah, lots of rolling resistance, but that's not really a big deal on snow because you can't really ride a 23c tire efficiently on snow. Or over things. Or through things.

Broken helmet #3

Hit some hidden ice on my cyclocross bike and went down. Slid on my back a good 5 feet after I punched a hole in the ice with the back of my head.

I need one, or a stick, for my right ITBand

I have left IT Band Syndrome. I had been experiencing pain in it right before I went down. Today was the first time I was on that bike in a while, so I had forgotten that it was set up differently. That may have contributed to my fall.

I'm not so sure I don't have at least a mild concussion. Got home from my fat bike ride and I now have a headache, sensitivity to light, and am feeling a little nauseous.

It's my fifth one, if it is a concussion. It's also the least painful one I've had, so there's that. Guess I'll be trying not to fall asleep anytime soon.
You know the more you have the easier they are to get then. Take it easy for a few days. Longest return to play protocol I ever initiated with an athlete was 6 weeks. We had another athlete, that wasn't under my care need about 5 months.

Just don't rush back. 2nd impact syndrome can be deadly.

Thanks! What do you do for a living?
