The All Things Cycling Thread

From personal experience: inattentive drivers, severe lack of safe roadways and bike lanes, a general hatred for bicyclist, and some cyclists that don't follow the rules.

From what I've read (link and elsewhere) cyclists are often to blame for fatal accidents. Many are urban, at street intersections, riding on sidewalks, or at night.

Not many get run over from behind. But those are the most disconcerting to me, because there's nothing you can do about them defensively.

Merry Fatmas. Perfect conditions for a fat bike ride. Snow is still very fluffy. Tires set at 2psi. Possible winter 50 on Sunday on the cross bike.

did a loop around the main part of Fort Bragg today, just 12 miles mix of trails and road. One jump up onto a sidewalk that had a rather large curb caused quite a gnarly bump. Now it seems the rotor is rubbing in one spot on the back disc brake. Any suggestions?

Odd. Did your bike fall over or did the rotor take any impact?

I would've thought the front took the brunt of the impact. No, I didn't fall, it slowed me down a lot, but I kept going. I couldn't feel it riding, but when I was brining up the stairs to my apartment, I felt it sticking while I was pushing it. I flipped it over and pedaled it around a bit and there's one small spot it seems to rub against.

a closer examination reveals that I evidently bent the rotor. I bent it back some, but there's still a slight stick to it.

It's ungodly easy to bend a rotor ever so slightly that it starts rubbing. It has to be the most annoying part of disc brakes. I'd invest in the Park rotor tool.

messing with it myself, I seem to have bent it back to where it doesn't rub. Am I safe?

and which Park tool are you speaking of? I googled them and saw a couple of different options.

Yep. I've had one of those in my hands all day today. Working on several disc brakes that have been a pain to install and adjust. Makes life pretty easy. Use the small end on the inside of the rotor and the long end on the outside.

Thanks for the tidbit. Will definitely pick one up. Might just order that one. Did a quick 10 miler through some small trails and roads here on Bragg and everything seemed to be working fine, but I'm sure now that I've knocked it out of whack once, it'll just get messed up that much easier now.

You'll crash, it'll happen. Even laying the bike down on the brake side could do it. (Don't lay it down on the derailleur side). I have to true mine after nearly every race or fat bike ride.

Fifteen miles of deep snow in driving snow. Kind of sucked at the end. Started the year off right, though.

I'll have a chance to log my coldest ride ever in the next few days, if I'm so inclined.

Cold? That's cute. Supposed to be -13 here on Monday. Going out tonight to break in a friend's new Kona fat bike before he picks it up tomorrow. Maybe I'll start Strava and begin logging 2014 miles today.

Edit: 2.5 miles and then I got a catastrophic rear flat. Somehow I knew that cheap rear tire wouldn't set up tubeless well at all.
