The All Things Cycling Thread

tri vol,

Are you going to be here for the Tour de Blount? I'm not planning on doing the event, but if you are going to be in the area for a longer time frame we might still connect.

I'm still not sure but if I do I'm only gonna be there for Saturday. Some friends are gonna be in Johnson City on Sunday. Heading there to see them.

I want to get down there and ride Townsend - Cades Cove later in the summer. Maybe we can ride then.

Had a slightly defective Michelin on my rear wheel. First spots of the tread separated a bit from the sidewall. Then in one of these spots the tread wore out much faster than the rest of the tyre, exposing threads.

I played tyre roulette for a few weeks, seeing how long I could go with it. Yesterday I saw another layer of threads and concluded that better be the last ride on it.

And as you guessed about 1.25 miles away from home I heard the dreaded "PSSSSSSS." (as it turned out the flat came not from the threadbare spot but a cut elsewhere). Facepalm #1 .

I didn't want to mess with fixing a rear flat, especially since I didn't know how far I could go without another flat anyway, given the condition of the tyre. So I decided to walk back. My cycling shoes aren't made for walking, so once I got to a more residential road I opted to take them off and walk barefoot.

Initially, this worked well--the pavement was smooth and temperatures comfortable. But later on the pavement got rougher. I became glad I didn't have to go farther than 1.25 miles.

It wasn't until I stopped walking that I discovered my feet were in worse shape than I thought. Almost immediately I noticed both feet have blisters. Facepalm #2 .

Cycling is dumb. Walking is dumb. And I am a tenderfoot.

I would have called the wife, gf, friend or all 3. Someone come pick me up

Mid week mtb race. 7 miles 1300' of climbing. We started at the bottom of a mountain and finished at the top. What a dumb race. The only thing dumber was doing it on a single speed. They did have beer and wood fired pizza at the end so I'll probably be back next week.

I just fixed my MTB, that sounds like fun.

It was fun and only $10. Beer and pizza not included of course.

The local bike club just started a monthly time trial competition. It is only $10, but the locations are all too far for me to ride to and make it there on time on a Tuesday night.

Sometimes FORC (Friends of Off Road Cycling) holds a mtb TT competition throughout the summer on a weeknight.

Are you still car free?

New low: someone shined a green laser in my eyes as I was riding home tonight. Several times. I couldn't get close enough to see the plates, either.

So I have been thinking about getting a road bike. I have never looked at them, in the past I've only had MTB. Any ideas/suggestions for a newbie to look at? don't really know what I'm doing.

Pretty much anything from a bike shop will suffice. Test ride bunch and pick the one that's in your budget and you like the best.
