Had a slightly defective Michelin on my rear wheel. First spots of the tread separated a bit from the sidewall. Then in one of these spots the tread wore out much faster than the rest of the tyre, exposing threads.
I played tyre roulette for a few weeks, seeing how long I could go with it. Yesterday I saw another layer of threads and concluded that better be the last ride on it.
And as you guessed about 1.25 miles away from home I heard the dreaded "PSSSSSSS." (as it turned out the flat came not from the threadbare spot but a cut elsewhere). Facepalm #1 .
I didn't want to mess with fixing a rear flat, especially since I didn't know how far I could go without another flat anyway, given the condition of the tyre. So I decided to walk back. My cycling shoes aren't made for walking, so once I got to a more residential road I opted to take them off and walk barefoot.
Initially, this worked well--the pavement was smooth and temperatures comfortable. But later on the pavement got rougher. I became glad I didn't have to go farther than 1.25 miles.
It wasn't until I stopped walking that I discovered my feet were in worse shape than I thought. Almost immediately I noticed both feet have blisters. Facepalm #2 .
Cycling is dumb. Walking is dumb. And I am a tenderfoot.
