The All Things Cycling Thread

I have.. I am in a SUV and you are on a bike.. SUV wins every time. I will that theose odds all day.. Safe travels

Lol with that logic no one should drive a compact, sports car or motorcycle.

I mean really how often and how long does a cyclist slow you down? Once or twice a month and for two or three minutes until there is a wide spot to pass? I bet if you charted it you probably get held up more often by a guy on a tractor, the mailman, dude on a moped and grandma driving her Buick. The cyclist just looks different and so it's a more noticeable inconvenience.

Never for him, he just runs them over in his big gas guzzling SUV.

So I was riding home last night from a Frisbee golf tournament after party and some douche nugget threw a full bottle of soda at me from his car window and hit me in the face.

And cyclists are the ones putting their lives at risk by riding on the roads... Jesus.

I wish I could have gotten their plate number, I have a few officer friends that would like to play detective and that owe me a favor or two.
At my wife's insistence, I installed a camera on the front of my bike, There was a segment on the news here in Tampa about cyclist mounting camera's and next day my wife had picked one up. see below for story.

I've considered it in the past, but like I stated earlier, my incidents with cars are few considering the she amount of time I spend among them on my bike. I'd have to swap the camera between bikes and stuff. Maybe I'll think about it some more. I have a friend that does it for that specific reason, and another that just likes to have video of his rides and races.

New helmet time. Bike fell over with my helmet attached when it was super windy, landed on top of my helmet. Nice chunk missing out of it. Going to the backup for now. Also had to replace the bar tape on my daily commuter. The fall tore a hole in the 1.5 year old tape. Now I have orange cork tape on a light green bike. Looks nice.

I'm relatively new to VN. UTK class of 1979. I ride road bikes, touring for fun and fitness.

Awesome! I dabble in a little light touring, too. Welcome to VN and I hope you stay active in this thread. I'd love to hear some of your stories.

Amazing how much smoother a bike will ride when the cassette isn't loose, the derailluer hanger isn't bent and the shifter cable isn't frayed.

Completely different feel, right? Having a proper tuned machine makes all the difference in the world.

Pretty well sums up my thoughts on bicycling.

The bicycle has the power to eliminate a nation’s dependence on oil as quickly as it can eradicate heart disease; it is among the most powerful tools for uplifting people towards social equality, and is the pillar of childish joy unlike any single thing on the planet. - Ted King

It really a you problem if you want to ride on dangerous roads with blind curves

I was specifically addressing the "overboard" gear you were complaining about. Not seeing a single thing you listed that's overboard. You think cycling gear looks funny so you consider it unnecessary. I think function matters more than form. I guess if all you care about is how you look doing something instead of how safe you are or how efficiently you can do it, then you've got a point.

I was behind the car that hit a fellow high school student one morning while going to school. He was a friend of mine, and was wearing a helmet. Until you see safety gear in action, or have an experience, you don't realize just how damn important it is.

I've gotten into cycling a bit recently too. Nothing special, just cruising around town a bit, or biking 20 minutes over to campus. Hope to get into it more in the summer.

Yeah, I don't bike a ton either, probably 2-3 times a week when it's not cold. I always have a blast when I'm out though.
