The All Things Cycling Thread

I was behind the car that hit a fellow high school student one morning while going to school. He was a friend of mine, and was wearing a helmet. Until you see safety gear in action, or have an experience, you don't realize just how damn important it is.

I've gotten into cycling a bit recently too. Nothing special, just cruising around town a bit, or biking 20 minutes over to campus. Hope to get into it more in the summer.

I have three helmets on the shelf that are smashed, two from high speed crashes and the third from a low speed ice incident. Each serves as a reminder for me.

My daughter got me wearing a helmet when she asked why she had to wear one and I didn't. I went down to the bike shop and purchased a helmet, two days later hit by a car from behind at a red light. Saw how helmet was peeled and have never rode without a helmet since!

I war hit from being in a parking lot, waiting to go onto the street. No helmet. Didn't hit my head, but I haven't ridden without one since.

Etiquette question

Intersection with left turn lane, straight lane and two right turn lanes. It's busy with lots of cars and tractor trailers. At the red light there are 8-10 cars waiting to go straight. You are going straight too. Do you wait at the back of the line or go all the way to the red light?

Back in line just like I would if I am in a car.

I wait in the back, but you can go to the front depending on your local or state laws. You're probably going to piss off people either way.

There are ideas out there that help to alleviate this problem. Nashville installed this thing called a "bike box" at one intersection downtown to test it out. Apparently a lot of cities around the country are trying it out. Basically a designated area at an intersection that bikes can ride up to and wait for the light in front of the line of cars. It would be neat if this really caught on.

New bike box offers cyclists their own spot in traffic

That's a cool idea.

To add to my previous answer, We a have a bunch of roadds that do have designated bike lanes. The only caveat to that is when you come to an intersection, you have to be very cautious of cars switching from right lane to the turn lane. They do not yield to cyclists! Also, if y'all vacation in the St. Pete area bring your shorts, shoes, and Jersey because there are plenty of really good bike shops that will rent quality equipment.

Damn. Closest I had was slamming into the side of car that did a very fast and sudden turn into a driveway. Lucky the timing was such I didn't meet the front instead of bouncing off the side. I didn't do any damage, and the driver apologized. I've had people be rude before, and luckily this guy was nice about the situation.

Generally I stay in the lane. If there was no right turn lane, but room on the right, and I was turning right, I might be tempted to pass on the right.

Glad to see there is a biking thread. I didn't ride much the past couple years, but hope to step it up this year. I have a road bike, but mostly mountain bike. The great thing about being where I am in georgia is there are lots of trails nearby. My go to trail on weekdays was Chicopee Woods and on the weekends hit the trails in the North Georgia mountains, usually the trails around Daholonaga. Got in a couple hours in today, but didn't break any records for sure.

A car doesn't pass on the left for a right turn.

Unless you're in a turn lane, never pass on the right. Better? A car never expects anyone to pass on the right, car or bike. I've been guilty of this several times and once had a car almost hit me because they didn't have their signal on and I assumed they were going straight but they actually turned right into me at the red light. In fact, I did this today but there was just one car and no one else at the light.

You're probably fine to do so, just keep an eye on anyone that decides to suddenly realize they need to go right.

Think maybe after 50,000+ miles I might know how to play in traffic?

tri vol,

Are you going to be here for the Tour de Blount? I'm not planning on doing the event, but if you are going to be in the area for a longer time frame we might still connect.
