It's ridable, just tricky on the angled flat rock with muddy tires. One good sunny day would help immensely. Baker will probably be fine as it isn't as deep in the woods as Chromosome, Bluff, and VA.

The tacos were solid.

Thanks. I am riding DTH tires so mud is a no-go. Getting hammered in W. Knox right now with strong winds and rain. I think I might just go hiking this weekend instead.

That is too many gravels! You are putting down the miles. I think 30 on gravel has to be worth 60 on pavement.

Well, Saturday I have a 200 mile race on all gravel. I actually enjoy gravel more than pavement. Keeps the mind sharp.

Where do you live? I would buy a real BMX bike off of CL or Ebay. This bike is in Asheville for $100 and is better than anything Mongoose makes by far.

https://asheville.craigslist.org/bik/6110174641.html

Edit: That is a pure race bike, not freestyle. If you are willing to buy something like a Fit or WTP 18" freestyle bike, they will probably hold up. I would not buy any freestyle bike from a big box store though. Get him a fast and light race bike and take him to a track :D

Oh, for a nice quality bike that is new, you could look at a Redline micro off of Ebay for about $250. If you don't want to spend that I would go with a used bike. This is a good price on the Redline: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-Redline-MX-Mini-20-Complete-BMX-Bike-Blue-/302069721840?hash=item4654c22af0:g:IOQAAOSw9IpX1Wym

One more edit: If he is set on a freestyle bike, Sunday makes a 16" model for about $230. You might have a local dealer, if not you can buy them online at Dan's Comp: https://www.danscomp.com/products/102848/2017_Sunday_Blueprint_16_Bike.html

Thanks... I've looked around for decent used ones but never any close enough to pick up easily and shipping a used bike almost negates price difference of a new one with free shipping.

Based off the link you sent I found this one...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/302088762607

Its a little more than I wanted to spend but I can swing it. Is redline a good brand? I've read mixed reviews.

I love Redline. I do not know much about their little freestyle bikes though. They were awesome in the BMX glory days and still make killer race bikes. You will probably hear some grief about them because they started selling direct via Amazon. Bike shops hate when big brands do that kind of thing.

Just make sure it is built properly, brakes work etc and let him rip on it. Have fun :D

I bet it does. I did a short ride on streets and through some wooded areas in west Knox and got a flat. It had the decency to wait until I got home to go down on me though.

I went tubeless on Tuesday because I was tired of getting flats on my Sequoia. There is so much glass in the streets here that it's almost necessary.

I might do that...I actually love the simplicity of the humble tube but I have been riding more street and bam, flat tire. I rarely get pinch flats off-road. Just glad it went down once I got home because I wasn't carrying anything on this ride.

Something to pay attention to I guess if I ride more street stuff.

48 hours until I toe the line for Dirty Kanza 200. 50% chance of thunderstorms for Saturday. That should make things interesting. It was supposed to be storming all day today and tomorrow, but the forecast has changed about 10 times since I started checking it 5 days ago. Not much rainfall predicted, but I'm bringing a spare derailleur hanger and singlespeed tensioner just in case I tear off my derailleur.

On another note: Two of my friends started the American Trail Race this morning. 5100+ mile self-supported bikepacking race from the coast of North Carolina to the Oregon coast. It can be tracked here: http://trackleaders.com/americantrail17 (Mike Kinney and Indiana Schulz)

Heading to Pisgah and Dupont for my birthday at the end of June. Any suggestions or tips from anyone who's been?

Good luck on your race! Your friends seem to be doing well in that insane race. Curious about what kind of gear they pack, sounds fun if you are insanely fit. You would be by the end of it anyway :D

I haven't ridden there in over a decade. Should be a lot of resources for Pisgah out there. I remember it being a really fun trip at least. Have fun!

I can't believe Indy is over 200 miles today. His longest training ride was 150. Mike is actually shooting for the win, but it's a long race and anything can happen.

Well I was going to post on here about me riding in a metric century tom, but these past few posts make that seem very unimpressive haha. I have been able to ride lots lately and I am loving it. Tempted to try an actual century ride this summer since I finally have a better understanding of the nutrition side during a ride. In the past I was only consuming one Gu pack for maybe a 3 hour ride then with just water, and those only have around 24g of carbs.

Side note: Haven't ridden a metric century in about 4 years. The ride starts at 7AM and is an hour from my home, so I am a bit nervous about prep before the ride. I never wake up that early so I am not sure how well I will function and what all I should eat before since I won't have much time.

Is it a supported group ride? Just eat what you normally do and ride it at your own pace. You'll do well.

My Dirty Kanza race ended at mile 125 after a second flat that included a dented rim and torn tire.

Kansas is beautiful.

Tough break. Do gravel bike folks usually run tubeless?

Almost always. The chance of a pinch flat is exponentially higher on gravel. My tubeless system didn't seal. I tried to put a tube in, but my pump seems to have had a problem and I couldn't get the tire inflated properly.

Dang hate to hear that! I rode with a guy in my metric century that knew of some people doing that same event as you.

My 66 mile ride went good till about mile 60 when I ran out of water and started to cramp. I should have stopped at the last rest stop but I was feeling good so thought I could manage the final 14 miles. I didn't come close to competing in the King of the Mountain competition, but I survived and that was the main goal. (44 out of 141)

The guy that won averaged 21.64 mph over the 66 miles which to me is really impressive for 3,500ft of climbing. I averaged 14.6

I took in a road bike on a trade. I don't know if I will ride it or just clean it up and sell it. It is a carbon Giant, supposedly not the stiffest of frames. I haven't ridden road since down tube shifters were a thing.

I will probably sell it just because I don't want to spend money on roadie gear but we'll see.
