The All Things Cycling Thread

The biggest knock was the frames are made in taiwan however most frames are made in asia now. Also some people might not be comfortable assembling the bike. Not sure of the warranty either. Imo, too many people say good things about them for it to be junk.

Vt can probably add more detail.

He already did

I've assembled two of them. They seem like good budget bikes. I'll always prefer to buy from a LBS just for the personal relationship thing.

Regarding the warranty for the bikes; BD has a 30 day no questions warranty and then after that manufacturer's warranty is in place. For your reference to this OP, I will include the link for the bike I purchased.
Warranty : Gravity Bikes . I agree with the relationship aspect with LBS that VolAtile mentions. I previously bought some parts and had work done on bike so when I went in to have derailleurs adjusted the guy did it for free when I purchased a helmet.

it sounds like you guys are describing wal mart bikes with a prettier paint job.

ive had a walmart bike. They are better than that. My friend has a $2500 mountain bike. Wanted a road bike to ride during lunch and when he didn't have time to hit the trails.

He had the money to buy an expensive road bike. Instead he went with bikes direct and is really happy with his purchase.

Not at all what I mean. They are above and beyond department store bikes.

i really dig these bikes a lot. does the bike selection stay pretty much the same, as in will they be offered when i have had time to gather the money?

Like every company they buy/make the bikes in runs at the beginning of the model year. They can run out at anytime, but that's unlikely. For instance, Felt is out of a lot of 2011 bikes but the 2012 model year starts in September.

I watched and researched for a good three weeks and even before that I was looking at them just to try and get familiar with what is out there. I purchased the 58cm bike and they had the stock listed as "low" for as long as I can remember looking at them.

how tall are you, tnt? im 6ft1 and folleyed through a self measurement test and got an optimal of 56cm. just wondering how comfortable you are with a 58cm bike at your height.

Take into account the frame style, too. Each different frame will have geometry of its own and feel different, even though they all measure 56, 58, etc.

I'm 6'2.5" and have a 35 inch inseam. I got the 58.5 because the bike from craigslist that I took for a test rode was a 55.5 and felt too short for me. The top tube on this bike has a slight convex curve in the top tube. remember if you are in between two sizes go with the smaller (what I was told)

another variable is your flexibility, torso size and riding style. smaller frame will give you a more comfortable upright position. Larger frame will stretch you out into a possibly less comfortable but more aerodynamic position.

Weight and aerodynamics.

Vt can answer that better than me but I'm pretty sure it is.

Body position, mainly. Road bikes are built for efficiency, hybrids are built for comfort. Gearing is not much different, but the hybrids will have a larger range of gearing in back. A road bike is also going to be built to take a lot more of a beating.

New orange bar tape and 3T stem. The best $40 upgrade anyone can get is Lizard Skin bar tape. This is amazingly comfortable stuff. Everyone at the shop rides it now. Sorry for the crappy photo. Phone was almost dead so the flash was off.

efficiency, as in aerodynamics? i guess what i am trying to ask, is from point A to point B, a guy is racing a xerox copy of himself. one on a road bike, the other on a hybrid bike. who wins? having only ridden mnt bikes, a hybrid is obviously much more comfortable for me, but speed is what is pushing me to leave mnt bike in the first place.
