The All Things Cycling Thread

another question. i am seriously considering acquiring a road bike, of some sort, because i do an easy 99% of my riding on the road. compared to my tank mnt bike, how much improvement can i expect/ hope for, speed, time, and endurance wise. ive never even sat on a road bike. i know there will have to be some improvement, because i am getting smoked by people that i know very well, i am stronger than, and in better shape.

question about road biking gear. is there any gear out there that while may no be much for aerodynamics, looks the bill and isnt skin tight as the lycra gear? im not a fat dude, by any means, by i would not look good in skin tight gear.

Try urban fit jerseys and mountain bike shorts have padding in them but aren't skin tight.

A ton of difference. Night and day.

Look has some nice bikes.

Tried to look up the Mondrian edition 596 in the catalog and they don't even list a price. Eeek. The 596 frameset only retails for $6k and I could get it for <$3k, I think. They're so nice, though.

3rd and final question. i know a guy that deals with used bikes. have bought a couple nice mnt bikes for friends, from him. he doesnt deal too many road bikes but has a handfull of really old Schwinn road bikes. they look like they were well awesome bikes in their day and he sells them for around 30 to 40 bucks. im thinking of snagging one, to see if i like road bikes. my question is, is an old Schwinn road bike going to give me an accurate opinion on them as opposed to a newer, nicer bike?

i think your Felt is a way better looking bike than that one. i guess its not as competitive but much more to my liking.

Not really. They're going to be heavy and not very comfortable.

Thanks. I'm dumping my Felt this fall to upgrade to a race-oriented bike. One of the guys is looking to put together a team and I want in on it. And the Looks are amazing bikes.

I borrowed an Orbea for the AF cycling Classic and it made a world of difference. Before that I had only rode my Iron Horse. On the bright side the Mtb is good for training.

Vt, i am looking at an 80s model Miyata 912 for 75 bucks on ebay with free pickup(local). reading in some forums that they are actually a well respected bike as far as classics go. i am ok with dropping 75 bucks on a try out bike, to see if i like road bikes. just wondering if you can offer your opinion on this deal.

Sounds like a great deal. I actually own a Miyata 210 from the early 80's. Paid $8.50 for it at Goodwill. Bent seat stays and all, it still rides great. It's a touring bike, though. Not as nice as the 912.

I've been mountain biking for about 5+ years and road biking for about 6 months. Today I cleared hills that I've never even come close to getting in 5 years and rode faster than ever.

Perfect summer day. 80 degrees and low humidity. 15+ miles in the woods. Never felt better.

Nasty and rainy out so I spent the day in the shop. Got a roof rack for my car for just the price of the specific clips for my car at wholesale ($48). Rest of it is free. Beats dropping $270 wholesale through my employer.

im getting addicted to speed and there are roads everywhere.. not to say you cant get speed on a mountain bike, obviously but its different.

Finished the bike leg in 54:26.7. Avged 15.8 mph. That was with 2 30yd runs with my bike between the transition area and the mount/dismount area. That was on a hybrid bike. I hit a top speed of 35mph on one of the down hills. Some of the road bikers put up some low times. I'll post them later.

nice work jhen. your legs must be feeling like jello tonight.

IMO, this feeling is better than sex.
Good job, Jhen.

You are right. Nothing like that rush you get after crossing the finishline.
I actually inproved on all 3 legs of the race and both transitions. Last years time was 1hr 46min 23sec. This year was 1hr 42min 33sec.

I plan on getting 50-ish more miles in tonight. Hopefully the wind will have died down by then. And I just put in a bid on an orange Fi'zik saddle that will go well with my bike. I love the current Felt one, but hopefully this one will look good with the orange bar tape I have coming in.

Scratch that - outbid by $1. I hate Ebay.
