What kind of trails are you talking? You can grab a hybrid/fitness bike but they're not made for much trail usage. Maybe light gravel/dirt, but that's it.
Take a Saturday and go to 2-3 local bike shops. test ride all the different bikes and see which one you are most comfortable with. It will also help you judge how different levels of components affect the performance.
Take notes on the brands of bikes, shifters and brakes you like. Then establish a budget of how much you want to spend.
If you buy from a shop, you know it will be right from the moment you leave plus you have a warranty.
Ebay and Craigslist have good deals but you have to be patient and there is a small risk.
Bikesdirect.com is another good place for a nice bike at a good price. Posted via VolNation Mobile
you will need make sure your frame and fork have the mounts and you will need new rims. Cable system shouldn't be that tough. Hydraulic systems are a little more tricky.
parktool.com should have step by step instructions Posted via VolNation Mobile

Sometimes your local bike shop will match or get close to online pricing if you ask. This is the best way to go because most will give free advice, make sure you get what you need and you help them stay in business. Posted via VolNation Mobile
Woke up this afternoon... 4 hours late for work... Just didn't show up or call... last day was Sunday anyways. Last night's race/ride of 45 miles in just about 2 hours really killed me. The beer after did me in for good, though. Sad day. Last day of RAGBRAI tomorrow should fix all of my problems, though.
Day just got better: just heard that I get to help design Standard Byke Co.'s new line of road bikes and 29ers. They're famous for BMX race bikes, now the owner wants to expand and re-brand.
I'm hitting top form. Rode the last day of RAGBRAI today and CRUSHED the hills. I got passed going uphill only once, but passed probably 1000+ people throughout the day. Got plenty of compliments on my fresh legs, too. Think it was like 68 miles or something. Slow average pace because I always had to slow up and wait for my friends. Wish I could have done the whole week.
Here's something for any mountain bike racers. It's about 4-5 minutes, but you'll watch it all. Damn!

They do some freaky stuff. Kinda makes me want to get a mountain bike. However, when I go hiking, I can usually only go up the trails and have trouble going down if there's any sort of steep ledge. Lol.
Had a nice 37 mile ride this morning...humidity was almost unbearable after it rained. Also, any suggestions on where to buy tires online because the one's I bought are horrible with handling. If I hit wet pavement my bike seems to want to slide from underneath me. What is a decently priced economical tire that will last about 1500-2000 miles?
Think I'm gonna drive up to Iowa City tomorrow and ride around Lake Macbride. Should be some nice roads to cruise along. Wish I had a mountain bike, tons of trails up there.
