The All Things Cycling Thread

Short first ride of the season. Didn't realize that there was still sand on the road from the winter and hit a patch at over 40mph while sweeping left on a descent. Nearly pissed myself as there was a car tailing me closely. 60* and very, very windy.

Man that brings back memories. Two years ago I did about the same thing while taking a sharp right turn. Lost control, flipped two or three times into rocks. My helmet shattered as well as my forehead. Broke 3 vertebrae in my neck (including my c2) and 4 in my back. Was a centimeter from crushing my face in and even closer to being a quadriplegic. Some how neither happened and i now back on the horse. Please stay safe on the roads fellas, ****e can hit the fan in a second.

wow. thats incredible.

That does not sound good.

One benefit of my not riding very fast, I guess, is that it's less likely I'll lose control.

The adrenaline rush is worth the risk to me. I hit the ground pretty hard last fall thanks to some wet leaves. I landed on my head two years ago, shattered my helmet, knocked me out cold, and dislocated my right shoulder. Got back up from that one to race my buddy back to his place and beat him.

In other news, I got fired from my day job today (for being too tired, too often) so I had plenty of time to work on my mountain bike. Now I really just need a fork, as tires, chain, rear derailleur, and brakes were all put on today. Went out and test rode it. The beast rides like a wet dream. Looks so damn hot, too. The WTB Wierwolfs are fantastic tires. Too bad I got let go today, as now I'll have to wait longer for my fork now... such is life.

Sorry to hear that volatile. You going to look for a job at another bike shop?

I lost the job at the body shop, not the bike shop. I don't officially start at the bike shop (paid) until the season picks up. I'm going to try to find a bartending job in the meantime. At least now I have plenty of time to ride.

Yeah, I catch myself taking some hard decents still. It's too much fun and the more I distance myself from the wreck the more comfortable I am getting (not sure if that's a good thing haha). Sorry to hear about the job man.

Thanks, but I don't think I've ever been this happy. It should have happened earlier, to be honest. Induced too much stress, because I don't know the first thing about cars or body work.

Anyways... here's an updated photo of my new whip.

Man, she is looking good. Just skimmed the specs and I like. What's the total weight in that? Just curious.

Didn't weigh it today. I'd guess roughly 25lbs, give or take. The fork I end up with will have aluminum stanchions and possibly aluminum crown. Still missing some parts. There's a Trek in the back, just out of the picture, that I may steal the fork off of for now. It's a full suspension Fuel, older model, that a guy wants to sell for $250 (full bike). I may just do that tomorrow to hold me over until I can afford a fork... which will be roughly $225. Donations are being collected, btw. :eek:lol:

So I got what I think is my first ever warning from a police officer this evening. Went through a stop sign without coming to a stop. Actually, two of them.

He was a bit gruff, but not a jerk. Most importantly, he did not issue a ticket.

Bike's looking good Vt. Velo, cant believe a cop pulled you over for rolling through a stop sign. Was it a busy intersection?

There's a new law in IL that allows cyclists to roll through stop signs and red lights when there aren't any cars present.

Busier residential. Actually, he saw me doing it at two stops. There was a car approaching the intersection at the last one, but I could see it signaling a right turn, so I knew it wasn't a collision risk.

He warned about having to help scrape me off the pavement. If he wasn't a police officer, and I felt like being smart about it, I would have told him that an intersection like that is the least of my worries, with all the idiot drivers speeding around.

Oh well.

Eh, if it's more of a play bike that half pound isn't much

I'll be racing on it, but I could love body weight and make more advances than losing bike weight. I'm just curious where it'll all come out at, weight wise.

I kinda wish I could ride a larger frame because a guy brought in a Voodoo full suspension frame the other day. It's pretty bad ass and he only wants $250 for it... Couldn't afford it anyway, though. We're going to build it up and sell it, though... The owner was talking today about getting a Voodoo dealership.

28lbs as of today. I underestimated it. Might shave off 1/2 lb or more with a different fork.

seems heavy for a hardtail. my full suspension weighs 29 lbs. my hardtail weighed about 25 lbs when it was geared and about 21 lbs as a single speed.

It wasn't the lightest frame to begin with and the components are all NOS, so they're not as light as newer components. That fork is still pretty damn heavy, I may even be able to get more than 1/2 lb by changing it.
