The All Things Cycling Thread

I'll be racing on it, but I could love body weight and make more advances than losing bike weight. I'm just curious where it'll all come out at, weight wise.

I kinda wish I could ride a larger frame because a guy brought in a Voodoo full suspension frame the other day. It's pretty bad ass and he only wants $250 for it... Couldn't afford it anyway, though. We're going to build it up and sell it, though... The owner was talking today about getting a Voodoo dealership.

Ahhhh, I though I had read that it was just a play bike. Nevermind then hand. Maybe the halfpound is a good idea.

It is in between, I guess. I have no intentions on making it ultra-light or anything. It has a mix of NOS Deore, LX, and XT parts on it. Nothing is brand spanking new except for the bars, crank, tires, and wheels. The fork and pedals will be, too, when I get around to ordering them.

I had to tear down my front wheel on my road bike today to replace the spoke which had just magically unscrewed itself from the nipple. It's nice knowing how to build wheels. I also replaced the chain and tore down the rear derailleur and cassette and cleaned those off. Trued the rear wheel, also. It's like a new bike again. Tomorrow I'll tackle the bottom bracket.

My riding partner's front derailleur is all fudged up now, too. No idea what's wrong with it, but I have to fix it tomorrow as all next week it'll be in the 60's and 70's and neither of us have much going on. I expect to get at least one century ride in, probably on Tuesday when it'll be the warmest.

Damn you. I just surpassed 30 miles... Then I broke a spoke in my front wheel.

I think I've had one spoke issue in 6+ years. Luckily, because I can't fix much of anything.

You're going to do a century next week when you haven't ridden 100 miles all year?

Probably not a century on Tuesday, but it'll be at least 50 miles. I just had something come up in the early afternoon, so I won't be able to get 100 in. I'll try for Thursday and the century. I shouldn't have a problem. I've worked out all winter, and noticed an increase of 5+mph average the two rides I've done, on windy days. Go big or go home, right?

Good luck with the century. I am signed up for mt mitchel this year. I am a little afraid of that at the moment haha

What's Mt. Mitchel? I'll probably do 10 or more centuries this year. I think I did 3 last year. The days of RAGBRAI are longer and flatter this year, but I'm not totally decided whether I'll be able to do that.

Sure, why not? :loco:

The Assault on Mount Mitchell and Marion

I would like to do that ride sometime, but it's a pain to participate in.

I climbed Mt. Mitchell solo a few years ago. I'd like to do it again.

Looks like fun. There's nothing even close to that high around here. I'd have to go to Colorado for that...

Closed up the shop today, after doing $1700 in business on my own. :clapping: Got out for a quick ride on a very windy day. I noticed a huge power and endurance gain over last year thanks to my offseason workouts.

Forecast to be in the 70s all week. Oh yes.

I can not overstate how much I hate riding (or doing anything) in cold weather.

Training words are all four letters: cold, wind, rain, snow, heat, etc. It was 71* today and there were still people out in jackets and balaclavas on their bikes. Ridiculous.

First sunburn is a doozy...

So I'm near home this evening, heading down a hill on a residential street. Admittedly, it's dusk and visibility is reduced. I see a car coming the opposite way, so, due to the low light, I'm holding back on the speed--just coasting.

Yep, sure enough. When I'm about a yard length away the van suddenly makes a left-hand turn into a driveway--right in front of me. Didn't blink or anything. Just turned as if I wasn't there.

I jam on the brakes and veer to the left, going around on the left side.

Really, how can you not see a cyclist coming right at you, on a straight road, when he's coming fully into the path of your headlights?

The lesson: always assume that the driver you might encounter is an idiot, because he or she might very well be one.

I've had people do that to me. One time I was flying down a hill at close to 40mph, a driver of a van looked me dead in the eyes and still decided to pull out in front of me and ride the brakes the whole way down the hill. Some people are ridiculous.
