The All Things Cycling Thread

Every time I am off work it rains, or it rains the night before.....I "tried" to go mtn biking Saturday morning, but the trails were 2 wet from the rain. Not riding is driving me mad.

Side note: Awesome seeing a cycling thread on here!!!

It's been super nice here during the day, but once the sun sets it gets cold. Sucks because I'm at work all day. Might not have to worry about that much longer, though. :-/

Trainer today. Just an ego boost for me as I spun at 48.9mph and 120 rpm for 30". Was just testing out trainers at the shop. Tried Blackburn Tech Mag 3 and their fluid trainer. The magnetic one was awesome. I think I'll step up and get a Tech Mag 6. Also, I'm moving into the apartment next door to the shop. Heh.

EDIT: Last night I won an eBay auction for a NOS 2007 Rocky Mountain Vertex 26" mountain bike frame. $27 + $42.50 shipping. Will be my first real mountain bike and a custom build at that.

I've been on a spending binge since I bought that frame. I think I'm going to outfit it with Shimano XT components. Going to build my own set of wheels since I learned to do so over the winter. Bought Orange RaceFace Turbine 3/4 rise bars on eBay just now. I need to buy a fork next... but Damn they are expensive, even at wholesale cost.

Seems like I'm the only one doing anything in the off season, even if it isn't riding.

Got my frame in yesterday, orange RaceFace Turbine 3/4 bars in today. Threw it in the stand at the shop today. Scrounged around all day and found Shimano Deore LX rear derailleur and shifters, XT rear brakes, Kona saddle, Origin8 seat post, and WTB Weirwolf grips. Ordered a set of Mavic XC717's laced to XT hubs yesterday for $170 - a freaking hell of a deal. Going to order a seat post clamp, XT front brake, brake levers, crank, Crank Brothers Mallet 2 Orange/gray pedals, bottom bracket, and headset next week. Hopefully I'll have this thing done by the beginning of March. The fork will be a tough decision...

Go with egg beaters over mallets. Better mud shedding and 4 sided entry is handy

I'm not set on riding clipless just yet, I'm looking at some platforms right now, too. I haven't ridden mountain in a long, long time and am not real comfortable going clipless just yet. Nor do I want to really buy a second pair of shoes, either.

I understand the shoe reason but you'll wanna go clipless after about 3 rides. Its amazing how fast your brain works when you need to unclip

Yeah. Maybe I'll just borrow some platforms from the shop, the decide after the initial rides. I would like to be able to use the leverage to lift the back end to.maneuver around obstacles.

Thats what I would do. Maybe platform with cages. I started cycling with mtn biking so was very nervous about clipless. Finally got tired of only having 50% power and more importantly my feet slipping off the pedals while trying to climb or going over obstacles.

Anyone have the shimano electric shifters for the road bike? My bro just got in his new bike and the things are absolutely amazing. I never thought a bike would be able to shift so seamlessly.

Some big money there. Is it Dura-Ace DI2 or Ultegra DI2? I don't think I'll ever ride DI2.

I keep watching videos on Pinkbike.com. I'm getting antsy to finish my mountain bike and I'm not even close.

...and now I want to build a dirtjump bike.

I'm even considering making my mountain bike a 1x9. Won't get the speed on flat, but it'll cut out some weight and complexity.

Just found this thread, I'm what you'd call an extreme amateur mountain biker. Old bike that's probably too small, no clips or anything, ride in sneakers, etc. Any advice for someone getting into the sport?
