The All Things Cycling Thread

ive thought about switching to road biking, and joining a club. problem is, i think i would freak out in a pack. would have to be 1st or last the whole time to be comfortable. the first Felt you pictured is the better looking of the 2. didnt look so much at specs. just talking bout looks.

Road biking will improve your mountain biking 100% and you don't have to join a club. Im like you, packs make me nervous so I ride solo or with only 1 or 2 other people.

mountain biking. on a crisp fall day when the leaves have changed and started to fall. the trail is so smooth there is nothing that compares to it.

great post. i agree. some fall pine needles slid me off the trail, up in the Black Hills, and also broke my fall when i went over the bars. good times..

found a steal on full carbon trek madone last fall and just started road biking. The first few times I dressed like I was riding my mountain bike with shorts and t-shirt and mountain bike shoes. I got a bunch of strange looks from all the roadies. Now I dress like them so I can go faster.

i was wondering why EVERY rider here in asheville wore the shirts. i thought it was just fashion. i ride my mountain bike on the roads here but i always get on the shoulder when cars approach. havent gotten used to it yet.

Volatile, or whomever, what is the average rate to have a professional due a tune up on your bike?

I take mine in once a year. I do minor stuff myself. Parktool.com has step by step instructions on every time bike repair.

The speed on a road bike gives you an aero benefit with a jersey. I'm fortunate to live near the Blue Ridge Parkway and lots of country roads. I stay away from the main roads.

$50-75. That's where many shops make their money. They can knock out a tune up in 30 mins. I do most everything myself and I'll be working in a shop this summer so I'll hopefully be able to do everything myself.

I wear a full road kit when I ride. I'll ve getting a new kit when I buy my bike since my old one is wearing away. It really is much more comfortable to ride in lycra.

I mapped a couple of loops in my town that will take me up some nice climbs and fast descents. One is 6 miles and the other is 10. I'm hoping I can hit one every morning this spring/summer/fall and do several 100 mile rides before June. I'm no longer riding RAGBRAI.

i think the blue ridge parkway would be a GREAT locale for a race. the road is well maintained and has about every twist and turn you could want.

Jersey and lycra shorts or bib shorts. Anyone can buy pro kits and they're fairly cheap. US Postal doesn't sponsor a team anymore. They're popular because that's who Lance Armstrong rode for for his first 5 TdF wins, then Discovery, Astana, and finally RadioShack.

You guys all wear helmets? If so, what helmet? I'm looking for a new one since I destroyed my old one in a crash and have been borrowing one from a friend.

Got paid again today and now I'm pretty much waiting on what my LBS says on price for the Felt Z6.

I always wear a helmet. I've wrecked too many times not to. A helmet has saved my life many times.

nah Im safe at work. rocks and roots and logs don't seem to get in the way there. but sometimes i wear it when im eating breakfast. danger time.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But what is not widely known, is it is also the most dangerous.

The only time I haven't worn a helmet in the last 3 years was the day I got hit by a car and I was only a block from my house on my way home from Wendy's.

I did good and put the bike on the rack and brought it to work. Don't think I'll ride it today though. Little game to watch at 12:40.

If someone wanted to purchase a bike just to ride now and then (paved paths along the river front, bike trails at a new natural park - I'm guessing that's dirt, etc) what would you get? I've been reading some, but I don't know whether to get one of the hybrids or just get a road or mountain bike. Is one better than the other to use an all round multi purpose kind of bike? I won't be spending a lot, since I don't really know how often I'll make time to go. But I'd like to have one to throw in the truck and go every once in a while. Any info you can offer is appreciated.

1. Price range?

2. Would you prefer to sit upright, hunched over, or in between?

3. What would the percentage of time spent on road vs. dirt trails be?

4. Do you want to go fast?

First of all, don't buy a Wal-Mart or Target bike, they're all junk. Secondly, check out a local bike store and test ride different kinds of bikes. You'll get a feel for what you're most comfortable with. Mountain bikes and hybrids are upright, road bikes are hunched over or in between.

Personally, I prefer road bikes. I have had a hybrid bike and I found it to be uncomfortable.

Don't be intimidated by the skinny tires on a road bike, you won't fall over. Mountain bikes and hybrid bikes, to a lesser extent, are less efficient than road bikes.

You'll want to get a proper fit for whatever bike you decide to get.
