volleygirl, my previous post also piggybacks on what Volatile said about Target bikes. i bought my bike in 98 and neglected it for many years, some time even left out in the weather. i can still hop on it anytime and ride. i cleaned the gears today and they look like new. a cheap bike will NOT give you that longevity. also, a mountain bike is the way you should go. it is more suited for a casual rider and you can ride it on the road or dirt trail or wherever. from there, you may decide you like one over the other..

I saw a dude the other day that had a tiny, round, rear view mirror extending from his glasses. I laughed my ass off.

Yeah, never understood that. I was given one and could never get it to stay in place. Too concerned over what's coming behind you.

Might be going to look at two Specialized road frames + components tomorrow for $100. I'm gonna snatch them up no matter what size and flip them.

1. Price range?

2. Would you prefer to sit upright, hunched over, or in between?

3. What would the percentage of time spent on road vs. dirt trails be?

4. Do you want to go fast?

First of all, don't buy a Wal-Mart or Target bike, they're all junk. Secondly, check out a local bike store and test ride different kinds of bikes. You'll get a feel for what you're most comfortable with. Mountain bikes and hybrids are upright, road bikes are hunched over or in between.

Personally, I prefer road bikes. I have had a hybrid bike and I found it to be uncomfortable.

Don't be intimidated by the skinny tires on a road bike, you won't fall over. Mountain bikes and hybrid bikes, to a lesser extent, are less efficient than road bikes.

You'll want to get a proper fit for whatever bike you decide to get.

I would agree with all of this and add if you are going to ride on dirt a lot, then you probably want a mountain bike. Otherwise go with the road bike.

buying from a bike shop gives you peace of mind but you can save money buying on ebay or craigslist once you know what you want.

Yep. Apparently one is "parts only" but I don't think the guy knows what he's really talking about based on the description in the Craigslist ad. One is a Specialized Roubaix and the other is a Specialized Sequoia. He's got some wheels, too, but not much info was provided about those. I'm hoping I can get up there on Friday, since he can't show them today. I'll probably come home with a car full of bike parts. I'm not exactly sure where I'll put all of this (plus 3 other bikes I have to get from a friend's house). My shed is full of camping gear and other stuff. The lean-to shed has 2 Harleys and my Trek in it. My bedroom is full of boxes. GUESS IT'S GOING IN THE LIVING ROOM!

Confirmed: Two frames for $100. I could potentially make some bank off of this.

Harleys aren't mine, they're my dad and brother's. You'll never catch me riding a Harley. Give me a Triumph Speed Triple.

I used to climb a short, 20%+ grade hill every once in a while. I felt awesome afterwards, but could barely finish the last mile to home.

I also solidified my work-for-discount at the new LBS. I'm hoping to parlay it into an actual paying job later on. And I've settled on the Felt Z6. He said he'll be able to knock it down to around $1300 depending on what they do for shipping and possibly getting it to me tax-free. He wants me to be the first one out on a Felt in the area BAD. Possible sponsorship for the local crit, too.

i dontt know what % this hill is, but i sure know what % of my energy it took getting up it.. honestly, it makes me think i wouldnt mind "collecting" some hills that lie around here. a unique sense of small accomplishment.

I hate hills as much as the next guy. I'm sure I'll be better at them once I drop about 50-70 lbs.

Congrats on conquering the hill. There are some of those around here and I've got a mental list of them.

Several ways, one is the bigger gears on road bike makes you stronger. Another is amount of pedaling. On a typical mtn bike ride I generally don't pedal downhill or when setting up to clear something technical. The result is I only pedal about 50% of the time. On road bike I pedal constantly unless I'm going over 30+ mph which is rare. So I'm pedaling 99% of the time.

I ride more since I don't travel time going to the trails.

another thing I've found is if I'm tired mtn biking then I might take a break at a trail intersection cause no one is going to see me. When I get tired on the road I keep riding. Cause sitting on the side of the road in full lycra with traffic going by makes you look dumb.

The Z6. I couldn't pass up the orange/105/carbon combo for the price. I think he said I'll be sitting at about $350 below retail. So it puts me at $1250 for a great bike.

Good choice going with the carbon and 105.

lol @ side of the road comment! i ride a mountain bike so i look like a wayward traveler searching for a trail. :/ and i have never seen a road biker stopped, now that i think of it..
