The All Things Cycling Thread

Also on the way home. I was riding here, trying to merge over from the turning lane to the road.

Google Maps

For no reason, an idiot passenger yells out the window as the car is driving by. The car then swings across the traffic lanes and makes a left turn at the light after it already turned red. So they made this dangerous maneuverer just to have the thrill of yelling at me.

Really wish a police officer had been sitting there and nailed them.

I've only been yelled at twice in 18 months. Catcalled by teenage girls. Go figure.

Must not be riding enough.

I usually don't understand what they are yelling. Except today.

I made a right turn at a light, and was fixing to get in the center lane to turn left. I was in the middle of the lane. There was a slow-moving car a few seconds behind me. Despite the distance, the driver decided to lay on the horn (it was a small car, and the horn wasn't very loud).

I got in the turning lane and the car passed. A fat middle-aged woman yells, "Get on the sidewalk!"

It was more funny than anything else.

My mtn bike pedal bit my leg earlier when I was just cruising around, setting my saddle height. I can't wait to put Speedplay Frogs on and try clipless. I'm running Origin8 ProFormULs right now. Light, but a small platform. Super smooth performance, though. I'd definitely put them on a city bike.

Had a customer in Greensboro, NC complain about the cyclists on her road. She said they blocked the whole road and she couldn't pass. I apologized and explained they should ride single file. She admitted they did but the road was too hilly and curvy to pass. She said they should ride main roads such as Wendover (like Kingston Pike). Explained that cyclists choose backroads and side streets because there is less traffic and we really do try to stay out of peoples way. Then her complaint was 'I just don't understand why they have to ride on my road'. I finally admitted I don't know why they ride on HER road and laughed. She didn't find that amusing.

I would have just responded by asking why cars have to drive on the road since paved roads were originally built for bicycles before cars were mass produced.

Don't think you're going to convert many with that argument. At least not anyone under the age of 110.

Stopped to get gas at the station. There were two mountain bikes parked by the door. A minute later, not two, but three people emerge--two riders, with one carrying a toddler in a back carrier.

I'm not sure about the safety of riding around on the roads with a youngster on your back. But they did have a helmet on the tot. So I guess if the kid fell out the right way and landed on its head, at least that much would be protected.

On the topic of a**hole drivers. I was riding about a week or two ago and a huge semi towtruck type vehicle was traveling at about 60-65 heading at my brother and I who were cruising just over 25 or so. The driver decided to lay on his horn and pretend to swerve at us just as he got even with us. I was less then a split second from a serious serious wreck. I never have understood people like that and their ignorance.

Went out on a date with an ex of mine tonight. She mentioned something about me losing weight since she last saw me. Hell yeah, cycling. It was a rather awkward date, though...

Thats dumb. I tow my kid around in trailer through the subdivision but would never go on main roads even with a rear carrier.
