The All Things Cycling Thread

Oh, and my phone died with 20 miles to go so Strava only recorded 64 miles, so those extra 20 won't go toward my challenge.

Without wading through 154 plus pages to see, does anybody have any experience/advice for me concerning a fixie/single speed? Can't decide between fudging and getting a freewheeler or going balls out with a sho' nuff fixie.... I can't run any more and I'm starting to get a case of lardassification and want to stop it in its tracks...

I have a singlespeed mtb and love it. I used a conversion kit. it works okay. would recommend just buying a ss frame. never ridden a fixie but think that would get old quick. I like coasting.

Yeah... Since I have a lot of hills to deal with I'm thinking a SS mtb is going to be the way to go. I live in Peachtree City Ga and we have over 100 miles of golfcart paths crisscrossing all over town so skinny road tires wouldn't stand much of a chance. I have a Giant Cypress hybrid that is fine but I kinda like the aesthetic of the single speed bikes I've seen around here....

I have a SS 26" mtb, geared more for road. I definitely recommend a 29er if you're leaning towards a SS.

My one piece of advice is to use brakes, if you go fixed. You can get a flip flop hub that has fixed on one side and ss on the other, too.

I have been in preliminary discussions with a shop here in town that builds to order. They say they can hook me up with a really nice (read: good but not super high-end) bike for between 500 and 600 bucks. Rear brakes are a must for me and a 29er is one of the options being discussed. If I go ahead and do it I'll post pics of the completed bike.

If going 29er, just do both breaks.

I have a track frame from Pinarello on the way.

35 miles tonight. Crashed on some loose gravel, then set new PRs on three Strava segments, including the massive hill home by 15 seconds.

84 miles today, 19.9 MPH average. That's officially the fastest I've ever averaged for any ride. I'm dead.

That kicks ass

Did anybody see you bust ass? I've gone down twice.....once in the grass.....once in the street after a dog ran into my front wheel...

Yeah. My riding partner and the car driver I was talking to. I was trying to give her directions how to get around the locked gate ahead and didn't see the gravel, front wheel slid out.

that sucks....hopefully you weren't going too fast at the time. I wasn't that fortunate when I had my encounter with the dog. I had just come off of a hill and was moving on.....got some nice road rash

Ouch. I was going slow. Just a couple of scrapes and some gravel embedded in my knee.

38° and pouring rain, yet I still managed to ride.

The mountain bike race is going to be muddy as hell on Sunday. A good start is key, can't get stranded behind people that are going down in wet corners.

Gotcha. I rode in the cold rain again tonight. I'm at 260 miles recorded on Strava, I guess. 31% of the way through the challenge with 19 days to go. I'm going to try to knock out 50 more miles before a date tomorrow night. Then a slow 30 on Saturday morning or afternoon before my race on Sunday.

I just switched over to clipless pedals and shoes....my right foot has been going numb and experiencing pain on the outer side as well. I moved the cleat postion and it helped a ton, but I'm still getting some numbness.....just not as intense. Do I need some type of arch support or is this a cleat wedge issue?.....any ideas?

I had that issue with some speedplay pedals I had on my Trek... I moved the cleats back a bit also and it helped tremendously... I just had to get used to it and after a while the numbness went away....

Keep tweaking the position. What kind of cleats/pedals are you running? Make sure the straps on your shoes are not too tight, that usually gets me.

Speedplay provides the most amount of adjustment of any cleat system. They're awesome. Mine just have too much float, so I'm going to upgrade to the Zeros. I run the Frogs on my mountain bike, too.

Shimano 105's and the shoes are Specialized. I rode today and it wasn't as bad as it has been with the numbness....in fact not at all, but the outer side of my foot began to hurt near the end of the ride....about mid way between the ankle and little toe....this was only the fourth ride with the new pedals and it seems to be getting better each time out.

Same old shoes, though? New pedals take a bit of getting used to, much like a new saddle.

Pre rode the race course this afternoon, soft and tacky but NO MUD. It's fast as hell.
