The All Things Cycling Thread

Its funny that most cyclists are terrible runners so they immediately discount the benefits of running while most runners will embrace the benefits of cycling to improve running even though they are lousy cyclists. cycling community is too stubborn and pretentious imo.

I used to run. Started cycling, and kept doing it because it was more interesting. On the blue moon occasion that I run now, it seems really slow.

Last time I tried, it didn't seem bad while running (cardio was in shape) but the next day my leg muscles were killing me. My legs hurt in places I didn't even remember I had muscles.

I'm relatively new to cycling and typically ride 3-4 times a week. Due to time constraints of 4 kids and their sports and etc. I usually only have time for rides of 15-20 miles. My avg speed is always between 14.5 and 15.5 mph according to Strava and the avg elevation gain is 600-800ft......am I a fat ass slug? I don't have anything to compare these numbers to

It depends how many stops you have to make, and other variables, but I think you could reasonably expect to get to the 17-18 m.p.h. range if you ride enough. Maybe faster if you ride hard enough.

what kind of bike? in a city or subdivision or country roads? what kind of clothes you wear? clipess pedals or flat?

It's a cyclocross bike and the roads are mostly rural but I do have to cross a very busy Hwy 109. I just started using clueless pedals a month or so ago

Depending on your wheels/tires you might be losing a little speed here as compared to a full-fledged road bike.

they're 700x32 but they actually help the ride due to the type of roads I'm on......I've only logged 700 miles or so since I started. I haven't ridden with any groups or any other riders for that matter. I guess the increased speed will come with more riding time....It probably doesn't help that I'm 5'10" 210.....thankfully the belly doesn't hang over the belt though....was a wrestler in school and lifted weights up until 3-4 years ago.

Also think a cross bike is geared a little differently.

try adding some intervals once per week. that should help you gain speed. heard good things about the Time Crunched Cyclist program.

Probably a 48/3? crank and 11-28 cassette. Certainly isn't helping. I'm making the move to a 52/39 from 50/34 once I can afford an Ultegra crank.

Started putting orange headbadge and decals on my Surly Necromancer. Also added some orange Oury grips. Starting to look good, but I'm not quite sure how to get the decals off (on top of the paint). Any tips?

Also, I think I'm going to buy a scooter and fashion a way to carry my road and mountain bikes on it (one at a time). I've seen motorcycles do it, but only a few scooters online.

10 miles on beach cruiser yesterday. 5 were on the beach. Then an hour riding in circles in the condo parking lot cause my son learned to ride this week.

You got some rough roads in Mt. Juliet?

25 or 23 tires would give you less rolling resistance (be a bit faster). And yes, losing weight would help, especially if you have some climbing. Although on TOS there's a guy who must weigh at least as much as you who claims he can do 24+ mph time trials. Guy must have a massive pain threshold.

I'm not in the city limits. I'm actually just as close to Gallatin as I am Mt. Juliet. I ride on back roads right off of Hwy 109. Most of the roads are good, but there are strecthes that are your typical one lane types that are the asphalt/gravel mixture that can vibrate your hands pretty good if you're on 23's. I ride to stay in shape so I'm not overly concerned about my speed, but I don't want to look like a wuss when I start riding in some of the organized rides around the mid state. 24+ mph weighing over 200lbs? It must be flat flat flat where he rides.....it's the hills that kick my rear right now. I've been working on them to get better, but I've noticed that my toes start to go numb after about 45 minutes. I guess I need some inserts for the new cycling shoes

I'm probably 225-235. I might be able to do a 24mph flat TT over <10 miles on a TT bike. Weight isn't much of an issue in TTs.

Also, 25c and 23c tires provide nearly the same amount of rolling resistance. If you want a comfy, fast ride - get wheels with a 23mm wide rim (like HED Ardennes or Belgium C2s) and use 25c Continental Grand Price 4000s. You can run lower pressures and less chance of a pinch flat, and the cornering security of tubeless tires.

I've started having issues with my toes going numb. my chiropractor suggested straight and bent leg calf stretches. it has helped.

30+ miles today. got clipped by an suv but didn't go down. jerk just kept on going.

For real? Wouldn't you love to beat their ass? I had some redneck fool in a jacked up Dodge Ram with some loud exhausts put the squeeze on me the other day. i was hoping he was about to turn in his driveway....I guess they think that type thing is funny.

A buddy of mine got hit in the back of the head with a water bottle thrown from a passing car....he crashed....fortunately there was a state trooper two cars back that saw it and stopped to check on him and then chase them down.

had a buddy get shot with a bb gun. he guessed they were headed to walmart. found the car and called the cops. had the dude arrested.

On Wednesday night I got separated from the group along a stretch of single lane road construction. I got squeezed into the gutter by a guy with a bike on the back of his car.

I had a guy throw a bottle of Mt Dew at me one day with a cop friend of mine right behind him. Cop said that if it had actually hit me then he would have arrested the passenger for aggravated assault. They just got a littering ticket.

Had a friend get hit 3 times by the same guy on a bridge here. It was all caught on video. Definitely intentional. The guy got 3 days in jail, a fine, and probation. It was BS.

Also, seems like I've contracted the stomach flu today now that I've officially registered to race on Sunday. On the bright side, I should be a few pounds lighter.

Dang sucks that you got clipped by a car. I have not had any bad run ins. However, I have been smoked by a diesel before.

60 mile ride (hopefully) tom. It will be my first time to attempt that distance, and it will evidently be in rain..UGH
