The All Things Cycling Thread

So next weekend is a metric century that I am thinking of riding. Most rides I go on now are just 25 miles. I did a solo 40 mile ride a few days ago and was pretty spent but I did not prepare well or during that ride.

You guys think I could do the 60 miles? First 45or so is pretty flat. I figured it would be much easier since u could draft people and have sag support. Thoughts?

If you can ride 40, you can ride 68 with a group. Make sure to take something to eat on the ride. Gels or energy bars, and plenty of water.

43 miles today. About 40 miles less than my goal. 15-30 mph sustained winds cut me short. No point in riding if I don't enjoy it. Many times the wind coming off of the river nearly blew me over.

:furious3: Looks like it's highly likely that my next race is going to be rained out. Peoria, IL is supposed to get hammered with storms this week. Not a single race was rained out last year and this'll potentially make two in a row.

Seems like everywhere has been experiencing lots of rain. It has been great for the yard and such, but I can't get myself to ride since my bike is New. I am still at the stage where I hate seeing any dirt on it.

Thanks for the response, I think I will try and do the ride now. Planning on having a nice plate of spaghetti the night before and I guess have a minimal workout the two days prior since my legs will not be expecting a 60 mile ride

Road bikes are so easy to clean. Should have seen mine the night I found the crack... I spent 2 hours tearing everything apart for spring/pre-race maintenance before I found the crack. But really, a light rinse with a garden hose and some mild soap gets it good enough. Then lube and you're ready to rock.

yeah it def is, esp since I never let it go a few rides without a clean. But I have some bike spray wash (by White Lightning) that I usually just spray on and then clean with a microfiber towel. Then every few weeks or so I might take everything apart and clean/lubricate BB, headset, etc

I have been using Prolink for lubricant but it really does not seem to last long at all.

Wish I could afford a new bike. I would love to train for a triathlon. Is that where your name comes from, tri? I like cycling more than running.

Honestly, I don't take mine apart very often. Maybe I will be better about the new frame, but I do it enough at work that I don't want to touch my bike after hours. I just keep the chain/cassette clean and it's good to go.

Running is dumb. Just ride or race the bike.

Yep. I used to do tris but got tired of swimming laps especially since I'm a terrible swimmer.

The Springbook Sprint in Alcoa is nice and good for your first tri.

Lol. spoken like a true roadie. read somewhere that the impact of running makes your bones stronger and thus more power on the bike. I try to alternate between running and cycling. I can tell a difference when i focus exclusively on one. Performance drops in both.

First group ride in forever. Everyone had tri bikes or aero bars. got dropped in first 4 miles. Good times.

Running 1-2 days/week will make you a better cyclist. makes you stronger and helps you avoid overuse injuries.

Very true. I just hate running and my knees are too far gone from football injuries to do it.

Find a new group ride. All of the group rides here have a strict no aero bars policy, because riding in them gives you a lot less control and can cause crashes.

15.5 miles on the mountain bike. Late to the group ride, one of the guys gave me a ride home after drinking beer. Good thing because I wasn't looking forward to riding into the wind home.

Do riders on the tour run 1-2 days/week?

Not during season but in the off season.

Besides improving cardio it will help stretch and strength your hamstrings and engages your core more than cycling. also strengthes tendons & ligaments.

Its funny that most cyclists are terrible runners so they immediately discount the benefits of running while most runners will embrace the benefits of cycling to improve running even though they are lousy cyclists. cycling community is too stubborn and pretentious imo.

I'm on vacation. I think they are all triathletes so they are used to riding pacelines. I was way to slow for it to affect me.

I'm relatively new to cycling and typically ride 3-4 times a week. Due to time constraints of 4 kids and their sports and etc. I usually only have time for rides of 15-20 miles. My avg speed is always between 14.5 and 15.5 mph according to Strava and the avg elevation gain is 600-800ft......am I a fat ass slug? I don't have anything to compare these numbers to
