The Association Football Thread

I could be wrong, but I don't think intent to injure is a qualifier for a red card. Any time you go studs up and high, you better know where the opposing team players are as it is dangerous play. Was it harsh? Maybe. Did Nani give him a reason to brandish the red? Absolutely.

It wasn't an immediate red card given, so I imagine he checked with the linesman during that time. Guessing as coverage didn't catch it that I saw.

Nani rolling around like he was shot after kicking Arbeloa didn't help his case any either imho.

I think the red is horribly harsh. His attempt at settling the ball was such a natural soccer motion. You see players do that all the time. He had no idea Arbeloa was there. No idea.

Natural or not, it was studs up, chest level.

With the crack down on dangerous play now, that's a red every time. Intent isn't a consideration.

If you're going to send Nani off for that, then you need to send Diego Lopez off for punching Vidic in the head. It would have been equally ridiculous.

This guy sent of JT26 at Barcelona last year. I guess he likes to brandish red.

These card happy refs hurt the game. Noone wants to see depleted rosters in the latter stages.

The guy missed a handball in the penalty box, as well.

For sure. Last year's Final felt like half the starters were reserves for both sides. I think they should at least clear the cards prior to the final unless you've gotten a red in the previous game

I thought they changed that

Or do bookings still clear after this round?

HawaiiVol, studs up, even at chest level, is a yellow virtually everywhere. The rule for brandishing the red doesn't say intent, but that's the way it's called in every league. It was a horrible call, no two ways about it.

That was a legitimate red. Even Terry knew it was.

If y'all say so. Considering your supported teams, can't say I'm surprised. :D

And just because that's the way it's called in every league doesn't make it the right call. I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing it called more and more as they crack down on dangerous play.

That's what yellows are for. Had nani seen arbeloa, then yes, it would have been a red, but he didn't. Not even in la liga is that a red.

turkish ball must be even worse then

i will say, after seeing howard webb award so many penalties to man u in the epl they had this one coming

You can get it from ESPN, The Guardian, and any other source that covers soccer. SAF said this yesterday in his press conference. This doesn't mean Roo won't leave, but it came straight from the mouth of SAF.

Yeah, I know he did. Just saying I wouldn't use them to prove a point without checking reputable sources prior.

You probably knew that, but anyway.

No, I understand what you are saying, and you are correct. I just cited them because it was where I happened to be reading when I first spotted it.

We were lucky to escape with a draw today. De Gea was brilliant. Without him, we probably lose 4-2. Chelsea were a completely different side when Hazard and Mikel came on. I hope we can get the W in London. Whoever wins gets to play City at Wembley the weekend of April 13th/14th. GGMU
