Well, this surprises no one. Having a fresh perspective is good, but he's a little unproven as a head man. Hope he surrounds himself with good assistants.

You think so? 3rd place finish in a world cup. A good record in the Bundesliga and the UEFA's Champions League. Limited experience, but he's proven a lot in my mind.

I think this is a great hire for the U.S. In 06' everyone doubted the Germans and they finished in 3rd. He is a better coach than Bradley and Arena.

Well, he was fired from that 2nd job for having a record below expectation. I don't follow Bayern or Die Bundesliga in general, but I usually only hear of his tenure there as a disaster. And it's generally considered that he let his assistant do the game-coaching when he was with the national side. Now if that means he has a good eye for assistants, it's not a bad thing. But it's still a bit of a question mark.

His tenure at Bayern is not something to be thrilled out.
The bold is encouraging, but look at Germany's record in the last 15 world cups since their post world war II ban was lifted:

1st
4th
7th
2nd
3rd
1st
6th
2nd
2nd
1st
5th
7th
2nd
3rd
3rd

Average: 3rd

And it's important to note the 06 world cup was held in Germany.

I'm not saying this will be terrible. In fact, it could be great. However, there is reason to be skeptical.

A few thoughts about replacing Bob.

1. I feel like I may have been a little unfair to Bradley at times, but I think a change can be a good thing.
2. That being said, Klinsmann does have some question marks. From everything I've heard, Joachim Low had a lot to do behind Germany's success under Klinsmann.
3. One thing I think this change will surely bring is we'll see much more youth. Maybe even some more players like Jose Torres who Bob apparently doesn't really care for.
4. I'm interested to see how players who could potentially play for other countries will view the hire. Particularly the Germans (Chandler, Hurzeller). I'm also interested in seeing if Diskerud wants to stay (apparently he was unhappy about not getting called up for the Gold Cup). If we lose Diskerud because Bradley thought Robbie Rogers was more deserving of a call up, I'll be pretty unhappy about that.
5. The hire should have the greatest impact on the youth system. If Klinsmann can revamp that for the better, then this hire will almost certainly be a major success.
6. Let's remember that we can't have unrealistic expectations simply because we have a coach who has had success at the World Cup. We'll have to see how the players buy into Klinsmann and his attacking style of soccer. Hopefully they are ready in time for qualifying. Failing to make it to Brazil would probably be disastrous for the popularity of soccer in this country.
7. Hopefully, this change means we won't see much of Bornstein anymore. Same goes for some other guys who Bob seemed to prefer.
8. I'm also interested in seeing how Michael Bradley will handle this. Hopefully there aren't any hard feelings towards Klinsmann, because we need Bradley to be at his best going forward.
9. In my opinion, the biggest problem the team has had over the last few years has been the lack good forward play. Klinsmann was a great forward, so I'm curious to see who he wants playing the position and how forward play develops with him as head coach.
10. There were a few guys I probably would have preferred, but this could still go very well. As I said, the main thing is addressing the youth system. I think America could start competing soon. 2014 is probably too soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if we really do make a run in the near future. It's a shame we aren't going to host in 2022 (assuming FIFA is actually going to stick to this whole Qatar thing), because I really think we'll have a shot at winning it the next time we host, which hopefully won't be too much longer.

Klinsmann was one of my favorite players when he played for Tottingham and I think he will bring new life into US soccer. Without a doubt Germany hasn't missed a step with Low with great showings in Euro 08, WC 10, and qualifying for Euro 12 but Klinsmann brought new life among German fans during 2006. Prior to klinsmann german fans were pretty down on their team despite the WC 2002 runner-up finish as many fans would tell you was more luck than skill. Germany didn't win a game in Euro 2000 and 2004 and looked pretty bad in both. Coaching the US after coaching Germany is like coaching Vandy after Tennessee.

I expect alot more diving out of the US players

Yeah, I believe he was only in Bayerne Munich for 1 year where he finished only 3 points out of first. Wikipedia described his dismissal as the result of a disagreement with upper management. I honestly don't know that much about him, so I am excited to see what we can do in 2 weeks.

Margin of error just got wider: the 4th place CONCACAF team will play off against the Oceanic champion rather than the 6th place CONMEBOL team (who will play the 5th place Asian team).

edit: Apparently there's some confusion at the draw. Now I'm hearing that the CONCACAF #4 will play the AFC #5 (which was Bahrain in both 2006 and 2010) and CONMEBOL #6 will play OFC #1 (which is always New Zealand).

edit 2: I think I was right the first time and the ESPN announcer was wrong. But I'm not 100% on that. CONCACAF #4 vs. New Zealand (in all likelihood) for a World Cup spot.

Third round groups are out for qualifying. Considering that Costa Rica is traditionally Mexico's b!tch, I'd say that all of the top seeded teams (USA, MEX, HON) got fairly favorable draws:

Group A: USA, Jamaica, Group E Winner (Guatemala), Group F Winner (Haiti or Antigua)

Group B: Mexico, Costa Rica, Group A Winner (El Salvador), Group B Winner (T&T)

Group C: Honduras, Cuba, Group C Winner (Panama), Group D Winner (Canada)

Those in parentheses, of course, are only my predictions, but if you look at the 2nd round matchups, you'll see that they aren't that hard to predict.

For those who aren't aware of the qualifying setup, those three groups will all play a double round robin (six games), and the top two teams will advance to the Final Round Hex. The Hex is a double round robin (10 games), in which the top three teams advance to the World Cup, the 4th place team plays off against Oceania (New Zealand), and the 5th and 6th place teams are eliminated.

Pastore to PSG. huge for french soccer

And people still dont give a **** about French soccer. It's not like this is a world class player. Can't even get into his national team. It's pretty pathetic that Palermo literally just gave him to the highest bidding team. I feel bad for Pastore

USA men with a friendly against Mexico next Wednesday (9 PM, ESPN2) to break in Jürgen Klinsmann. Just announced the roster, and it's a bit interesting. Looks like he avoided calling up some of the Euros if possible. But still. . . Beckerman? Beasley?

GK: Howard, Hamid (DC United)
DEF: Bocanegra, Castillo, Chandler, Cherundolo, Goodson, Orozco Fiscal, Ream
MID: Beckerman, Bradley, Clark, Edu, Jones, Shea, Torres
FW: Adu, Agudelo, Beasley, Buddle, Donovan

Why am I so scared by this new coach? I guess I am afraid he might not really give a **** about US soccer, and is just taking a gig.
