Juan wasn't reliable as a PH. He only plays 3B. Can't hit lefties. Gattis, thus far, has proven an invaluable weapon for PH, but if he's the only other catcher on the roster, he isn't available as much to PH. Similar deal as with Ross last season. Arguably the best bat on the bench, but his PH chances were impacted negatively by being the backup C.

Very true. Still don't see the need for reed

Other teams use their backup hitter to PH. In the highly unlikely event that the worst happens, you make somebody else catch for two innings and you bring the AAA guy up after the game. Only the Braves have historically been so paranoid about catchers getting hurt that they've essentially gone into the playoffs with a 24 man roster because of it.

On how many teams is the backup catcher also the best bench bat? Historically, even? Pretty rare. I'd be willing to bet that NL backup C don't get near as many PH ABs as you think.
