The Atlanta Braves Thread

So why did we give up Vaughn? We could have probably taken Sale for essentially free without taking any money for the Red Sox. Especially if you’re gonna rework the deal
There’s literally no where to play vaughn. If you aren’t playing shortstop over orlando arcia, you’re never playing shortstop. Every other position is filled for like 5-8 years. We don’t use a bench at all.

Shoulder issues are way worse than elbow issues

Look at his delivery … just keep your fingers crossed and the Ferrari in the garage as much as possible
I'm surprised he was as durable as he was early in his career. The consensus on him when he debuted was that he was awesome, but not long for the league because of that motion. He actually was very durable for his first 6+ seasons in the league before his body started breaking down.

AA going to trade for deGrom and call it an off-season

I can already seen the postseason exit interview. Ah we did the best we could, how could we have known all the pitching would get hurt?

Really? His IL stints have been for a TJS, shoulder inflammation in 2018 twice, elbow inflammation in 2019, a rib stress fracture while throwing BP in 2022, and shoulder problems last year. You'll be able to knock me over with a feather if he stays even reasonably healthy this year, meaning like one 15-day IL stint.

The only non-baseball related things I see were getting pneumonia and COVID in 2020, and a bike accident last year. He's had a ton of baseball-related injuries.
Yeah that migtve been wrong.
I see the wrist injury was a bike wreck, and then the pinky was from a comebacker which is kind of a freak injury.
The thing I saw said he missed time because of a dog bite but I guess that was t true.

He might as well not even pitch the first three months. I mean the stuff is still there and he was awesome at points in 2023. But I have no faith he is going to stay healthy.

I know we don’t have a place for him, but he’s still a decent chip. Couldn’t have used him for another trade?

AA said he won’t have any timeline delays or innings limits

AA doesn’t believe in pitching limits apparently. For such a smart guy, he doesn’t take any “the truth is somewhere in the middle approach.” There are things he accepts and things he rejects.

Like not giving pitchers more than a one year deal.

I remember when you were pounding the table for Zack Wheeler. His AAV is $24M the last five years, which is what we essentially paid…

2020: Hamels/Shane Greene= $24M
2021: Morton/Smyly= $26M
2022-2023: Morton/McHugh= $25M

How many WS titles we talking? Maybe 3?

His inability to read the increase in player salaries and not take any risk for a starting pitcher is infuriating

If Ian can’t regain his 2020-2021 form and neither one of Waldrep/AJSS don’t work out, then we are in big trouble past 2024 regarding the rotation with how AA operates. Right now it’s Strider/Sale/Elder and that’s not a winning rotation. They need two of Ian/AJSS/Waldrep to be good. If none of them are…the window closes quick

Do you think AA is adaptable, or is he a "this is how I do things, and it either works or it doesn't" guy? In Toronto, he had more of a penchant for FA acquisitions.

It sounds like this is it. The most money he's given to a player that was not an extension or player being brought back is $30M, to Reynaldo Lopez, in year 7 of his job. He is not going to use the free agent market period.

The largest free agent starting pitcher contract we've given is $60M to Derek Lowe in 2009...just think about that absurdity for a moment.
