The cancel culture is getting out of control

From the article

I think the only policy or rule broken(in the article) was using students as translators. After that they offer "robust guidance".

From there the article kind of sensationalizes(see bold) difficulties the non English speaking parents incur communicating with the schools.

How many languages should schools be responsible for translating?

Just one in the United States.

If all of this is true, it's such a bad look for Dave. One big reason he gets away with what he says is he seems so thoughtful and pretty fair.

Andrew told Insider that students were instructed to place their cellphones in "pouches" as they approached the assembly hall. Shortly after, Dave Chappelle came out on stage and asked any students who were offended by him to raise their hands and approach the stage to voice their grievances.

"Two transgender people were in line and one transgender person was trying to explain and Dave Chappelle kept talking over him and blatantly disrespecting the fact that he was talking and trying to make a joke out of the situation," Andrew told Insider.

"And then the second transgender person tried to explain to Dave Chappelle what misgendering was and Dave Chappelle interrupted her and completely ignored that. And then moved on to the next person."

Andrew added that at the end of the evening, Chappelle proceeded to tell the students: "I am better at what I do than all of you in this room combined."

Chappelle — who appeared on stage with documentary film cameras — was reluctant to engage with the concerns of the students, but continually told the audience that they "can't silence" him.

"He kept on saying, 'You can't silence me. How dare you try to silence me.' Not one person in that room was trying to silence him at all," Andrew said.

"One girl raised her hand and said 'I understand what you're saying and I respect your art, but you don't understand how many transgender people die every day.' And he interrupted her and said, 'N-----s die every day.'

"He said these kids deserve an F for forgiveness," Sims said of Chappelle's response to the evening. "Give them some space to grow. They are going to say things that are immature."

Dave Chappelle's surprise appearance at his former high school was 'the most narcissistic display I've seen,' according to a student who was in attendance

He always has his audience give away their phones. It’s common so new material doesn’t get leaked. I’m not really seeing the bad look.

Trans people die everyday? What does that have to do with comedy?

This wasn't a comedy audience. This was an assrmbly of kids from his former high school that expressed disapproval of his last show. So he and the administrators thought it would be a good idea to surprise students (while confiscating their phones) with a Chappelle face to face so he could fail to address their concerns and crack jokes, if we're to believe the reporting.

It's completely out of touch, which is not his recent brand of comedy. This sounds like something out of Borat.

Just want to add that too many comedians these days are complaining about "cancel culture" and the political sensitivities of college age crowds, when their routines bomb, because they are neither original or funny. Angry, bitter, profanity-laced tirades are passing for stand up comedy at the moment.

The few out there who are genuinely funny and unique, like Ron White, don't whine about either "woke" or "cancel" culture during their routines. They just perform their act, and leave the whining up to others.

Speaking of not funny….. what have they done to Saturday Night Live….. that show is so cringe worthy….. I hope they get rid of the entire cast and get some good comedians back on that show.

SNL went off the rails many years ago.
I hadn’t seen it in awhile besides some skits that showed up on social media…I tuned in to watch it a few times after trump won thinking it would be hilarious…. Alec had a few funny skits and Melissa McCarthey killed it as Sean spicer but the rest of the cast was unbearable trying to watch…. The other day they shared a skit that they did on global warming and I was literally embarrassed for the people on the show….. it was that bad.

They did a skit awhile back called "The Bubble". Which I believe was an accurate portrayal of leftist urban elites. And then there was the election night skit from 2016 with Dave Chapelle. Also, making fun of white Democrats.

The last time I watched an episode of Saturday Night Live was when Peyton Manning hosted it. That was in March of 2007. That show has stayed on the air this long more as a matter of tradition, than quality. The caliber of guests they attract, especially musical, really sucks. Remember when Ashlee Simpson got caught lip-synching in 2004? Jude Law was the host, and said something like, "This could have been worse... I mean, the producers could have actually let her sing." Lorne Michaels banned him for that. That reflects part of their problem too. They can't laugh at themselves anymore.... and Michaels meddles too much.

That’s possibly the dumbest stance I’ve seen in a long time. DC is one of the great comedians of all time and his last special was insanely popular. Where do you get the notion that he bombed?

Then it sounds very made up. He pays a company at his shows to take up cell phones. It’s became pretty popular with comedians. But the idea that kids voluntarily gave up their cell phones for some school assembly? I’m a bit skeptical about that.

But even so, I’m not sure what is such a bad look for him out of this. What was so bad about what he said?

That post you replied to, did not mention Dave Chapelle's name. I was making a general observation of modern stand up comedy, which didn't specifically reference anyone. Where did you get the notion that I was talking about Dave Chappelle?

Okay. Which comedians were you speaking about? Bill Burr, Chappelle, Rogan, Louis CK? I’d argue all of the actual talented comedians have mentioned the issues of cancel culture and it’s negative impact on comedy.

It's not customary within the show itself. I've seen Ron White at the Mirage in Las Vegas, and Brad Garrett in the MGM Grand. Neither one wasted time talking about political correctness or cancel culture. They just performed their act... White is hilarious.

Burr, Rogan, Chappelle have all spoke openly about cancel culture before. It’s an issue that effects comedy. The idea that Ron White or Brad Garrett are on their level seems absurd

That's the detail you think is made up, LOL?

IDK that me explaining it is going to help. I thought I did.

Those guys are all offending and absolutely thriving. 2 of them are supposedly canceled and up for grammy's. They say they're getting canceled and then sell out shows. It's great marketing.

Cancel culture has always been a part of comedy. People literally went to jail for telling jokes, and that's real cancel culture. Losing gigs for offending is a healthy part of comedy and it's a free market mechanism that balances out the comedy world. I'm not saying it never goes too far, I'm just saying it's always there and it's useful.

It just seems odd. I think the kids are trying to misrepresent it. Seems the angle is “he took our phones to say mean things”. But yeah, I didn’t see anything horrible that you quoted him saying. Where’s the bad look? What was the worst aspect of that?

No, it's just a matter of personal taste. I think Ron White is funnier.

I’m not sure how much meaning I attach to a Grammy or any other awards show. I mean Greta was nominated for a Nobel prize.

To pretend cancel culture as a whole is a market function is dishonest. For example the attempts to remove Chappelle’s special, despite the fact that the market loves it.

If the issue were strictly a market issue as you claim, cancel culture wouldn’t need to exist. No one would watch his special or attend his shows. Cancel culture is about small minorities attempting to force their world view on everyone else.

Jesus Christ, dude.
