They have been weaknesses his whole tenure here.
Hahaha!
Let's see what the exception to the rule is
1. A coach that is 227-94 in D1, and completely changed the landscape of two programs while he was there and then having a down year.
or
2. A coach that has gotten lucky with shooters bailing him out his whole career and got lucky last year without shooters.
You tell me which one is the exception to the standard. Because if it's #2 Bruce Pearl is the luckiest coach to have ever coached especially with turning what most thought to be crapped into gold his first year here.
What's his record in 5 point games? I don't know. If he's 20-70 of in that category then I think it's a legitimate concern.
Or who are the 5 point wins agaisnt? If he's 30-2 in 5 point wins agaisnt the ETSUs and UTCs of the world since at UT, I still don't know if that is much to brag about.
I've scratched my head about Pearl sitting on leads for a long time and our halfcourt offense in said games. Say what you want, late game strategy isn't one of Pearl's stronger suits.
Proof?

I remember one circus shot from Lofton at the end of the game to win a close one. Outside of that who's job is it to draw up a play to put it in his best player's hands? Because I'm sure every opposing coach was obvlious to the fact that Lofton was a great shooter.
Not really more times than not we have won our close games while he has been here up until this year. And outside of a couple of Lofton heroics (first round NCAA game in the first year), not all of those close games were won by Lofton being Lofton. Because if that were the case, what was the reason Bruce led the team to 31 wins when Lofton was very inconsistent his senior year due to dealing with the cancer before the season.
We had players that could make up for lack of structure then. We don't have that now, and Pearl has shown that he isn't capable of constructing a play to get a good look in late game situations.
Which, of course, is irrelevant. We're not talking about winning a 6 point game. We're talking about games decided on a last possession.
I can think of two games off the top of my head we've won. Winthrop and UGA.

Yeah, but the play call got an open layup for Ramar, which he missed before Dane tapped it in. I can also think of game winning shots at Memphis and home versus Ole Miss for Tyler Smith in 2008 off the top of my head. Plus, I remember Pearl setting up the defense in Gainesville in 2006 which got us another layup by Bradshaw based upon Pearl's huddle instructions. Pearl's teams have always done well in the close games, including prior to Tennessee, yet struggle this year. It's obvious what the anomaly is.
I disagree with the vast majority of this. The Tyler Smith play against Ole Miss was just an isolation play. A middle school coach could draw that up. And the amazing defensive call Pearl made was called "deny the inbounds pass." Hardly incredible stuff. It just happened to work. Denying the inbounds pass in those situations is just as likely to have the opposing team shooting a layup as it is you stealing a pass. It just happened to work that time.
Why is it so difficult for you guys to give him any credit? It's all dumb luck for 20 years until his true colors are shown this year? The Tyler Smith isolation play didn't work a couple of games ago for Tony Jones, so it's possible that the play was a good setup to find an advantageous matchup for Tyler in 2008. And, yes, the Florida defensive set up was noted by Pearl as stating the spot on the inbound could create the type of passing lane for Bradshaw to steal the ball. It was a good call.
