The cumulative Pearl thread

Do you want Bruce Pearl to be Head Coach at UT next season?

If so, we'll be in agreement. But, if nothing else comes out of the investigation and all this junk stems from a bbq coverup?

Lying to a governing body became the infraction.

If Pearl is fired before the sanctions are announced, how is it expected to affect the sanctions that UT basketball receives? I would think they would be less severe, but people seem to think the sanctions will be similar either way. Anyone able to elaborate?

Also, please don't respond and say, "Bruce Pearl is the best thing to ever happen to UT basketball and firing him would send us back to irrelevancy." Not only would that be not true, it doesn't have anything to do with the thread.[/

the only thing qrong with that therory is that mike hamilton has already gone pulic and said that pearl is our coach and wikk be our coah for years to come that faith may give ncaa more reason for lashing out harser punishment

I've been a big supporter of Pearl (even have a signed photograph of the two of us up in my office), but here are the facts:

1. He got us in trouble with the NCAA because he lied (over something stupid, no less) -- and there's no telling how bad the sanctions could end up being.

2. This year's team doesn't play together, doesn't play with consistency, and doesn't play with great effort. Whether that's a function of poor recruiting or his coaching ability, it's still his responsibility.

3. The future (with the NCAA looming, potential player departures, inexperienced and/or insufficient backups, and what looks to be a recruiting class devoid of any size) is questionable at best.

If losing Pearl is the best option to brighten our prospects and get us going back in the right direction again, then I can't say I'd be opposed ...

Our athletic department is under investigation by the NCAA. The investigation includes football, basketball, and baseball. The most egregious sport which initiated the investigation is football. To tvols point, if the penalty is influenced by the retention of the criminal, then the penalties should be reduced because of the new football staff.

The Pearl incident is related directly to Pearl lying for which the AD and conference swiftly punished him for. It looks fairly straightforward that the NCAA will penalize our athletic department in some minor form. I suspect the basketball team will suffer no direct problems, but the unknown is the penalty that the NCAA will enforce on Pearl for lying.

Thanks to Tark the NCAA can't fire Pearl, but they can sure make his life miserable and essentially force UT to fire him to keep the misery out of our program.

Doesn't matter. Tennessee basketball committed the violations. Bruce Pearl and the assistants are employees of Tennessee basketball.

If the firing of Bruce Pearl was warranted when the information came out, that is when the firing should have occurred.

The lamest thing in this whole affair is "Mikey Evils" suspension of Pearl. That guy has a Napoleon complex of the highest order.

I just hope the AA lays the bulk of the punishment on the BBall team and simply slaps the wrist of our football program....

He doesn't have a contract. I'm confused to why everyone is sure he's coming back.

I don't agree with that. I think football is much less likely to get hit hard than basketball.

I can't wait for UT bball to be irrelevant for the next few years. I guess this year has been a good preparation for it.

The list of problems will be much longer and severe for the football team of the three sports. Why would they get a pass on the punishment?

Because the football coach didn't conspire with recruits and assistant coaches to lie to NCAA investigators, then when they came back a second time the assistant coaches kept lying while the HC decided to tell the truth.

Since when? Everything I've heard, read or seen rumored has pointed to basketball getting the smack down.

After 6 pages of responses I think its ok if I go off topic now. I'm curious as to what you think would happen to the program if he got fired and who we could realistically get to replace him.

I think Phil Jackson would come take the job, and all the top recruits in the country would immediately come pay for him. Also, Jared Sullinger would probably transfer here to play for him.

Buzz Peterson. Isn't it obvious that those of us who think Pearl deserves to go want Buzzball back?

Dang I was hoping for Mike Krzyzewski but I guess I would settle for Phil...
