The cumulative Pearl thread

Do you want Bruce Pearl to be Head Coach at UT next season?

Why? He's going to be paid either way, isn't he? He's still the best coach on the staff and his players deserve to have him as coach, I think. I also think it all depends on how hard the NCAA lowers the boom.

He won't be paid either way and being the best coach on our staff is hardly a feat.

If CBP were fired as soon as Tennessee learned about the violations and that there would be an investigation, the NCAA would likely take that into consideration (much like Dooley being brought in to clean up the mess left by Kiffin); so I don't think they were waiting to find out the punishment before deciding on Pearl.

Because of the embarrasment he brought to the school? Surely not because of his team's performances prior to this season.

Redlegs, it goes back to before he was a UT. I dealt with Bruce in Milwaukee at UW-Milwaukee and he is a Grade A douche bag, IMO. I didn't like it when TN hired him and I'll be glad when they fire him. He's bad news and had zero remorse for his actions except for the fact he got caught.

September is a bad time for a coaching search. If we need to fire somebody, March/April is the time.

Fair enough. I just know that he's taken them to successes that they hadn't seen before. Prior to all this mess, he could have run for governor.

"I dealt with Bruce..."

"Grade A douche bag,..."

can you elaborate on this please?

Yes. But anyone that watches Bruces coaching style can see he's not that great of an in game coach. Great motivator but I'd pick 50 other guys to end the last two minutes of a ball game when its tied.

Sure, I did a lot of work with the Athletic Dept. and Bruce was a jerk. I know most coaches are used to getting their way, but none of the other coaches I've ever worked with had a bigger ego. He was fine if you bent over backwards for him, but if he was told no, he turned into a big baby. Of course everyone there did what they could to not to get him upset, but a lot of his request and actions were ridiculous. Plus he was cheating then too. Again, that's my personal experience, so my views are different than the average fan.

Maybe so. But with all due respect, Tennessee wasn't exactly a glamor job when he got there when it comes to hoops. Not sure how many high profile guys would come there and stay. Pearl had you guys winning a conference title and ranked #1 in the country. Just sayin'...an argument can definately be made.

During the pregame show on the Big Blue Radio Network, the Kentucky announcers were speculating that this might be Bruce Pearl's last game at Thompson-Bowling Arena as head coach of the Vols.

What say you guys?

Most of the guys who want him gone are the same ones who were apathetic to basketball before Bruce arrived here. I for one have been going to game regardless of our record since we played games in Stokely. My Dad has been going even longer than that when they played at Alumni gymnasium and we miss only about 2 games a year due to scheduling with bible services and things of that nature. That being said I have sat in Thompson Boling Arena and it be infiltrated by other fan bases (your team especially) I like what Bruce has done here and would be willing to have him sit even the 2 years just because of the pains I have witnessed firsthand and this being the 6th year in a row we will dance. That last sentenance provided we don't get embarrassed by a horrible team in the SEC tournament. I hope he returns but I must say I am not optimistic. Bruce came up in the hallway and thanked the fans for their support and the majority didnt flinch they kept walking towards their cars. i for one stopped and thanked him for making this the best 6 years of UT basketball of my life.

The bottom line is,he might be gone and for those who want him gone can you please tell us who Tn hires ?
What good coach is going to come to Tn with all the mess going on ?
I dont like what he did and in the end he is the one who is going to pay the ultimate price for his actions. If he is here good and if not good.I hope he stays just because you dont like him.jk

I don't know what is the problem this season. I've never liked Pearl - the person- I like what he's done here for the program(assuming we don't get hammered because of the recruiting violations).

Yep, I tried out and he said mean things to me.....get a grip. I worked with him and he was an a$$hole. I'm entitled to my opinion of him just as you can think he's the greatest coach ever if you want. There are good young coaches that pop up every year, so we should just hang on to Bruce because you don't think we can do better? The man isn't a god and can be replaced. Send him and Hammy packing and bring in people who want to do it right.

This is totally the opposite of my experience, and I've been following UT basketball since the 70s. Most of the fans I've talked to who are desperate to keep Pearl at any cost are the ones who just jumped on the bandwagon a few years ago. Long-term fans know that there's not that much difference between what Pearl has done at UT and what Jerry Green and Don DeVoe did; they know Pearl's not the only one who can win here.

I think this view is more reflective of reality.

Spot on. As usual.

Who can say?

I think if he does leave it will be his decision and soon after the season ends (not June or September).
