The death of a school's tradition?

I can't stop laughing at this.

Are you saying there's something wrong with a black man having his point of view? ie, are you calling Lawrence an Uncle Tom?

Are you joking? Jesus Christ man...

I remember Tubervillle complainiing about how the confederate flag kept him from getting some recruits.

I was wondedring what it was like, as a recuit.

I remember CSS raising hell about the confederate flag flying at the State Capitol building of SC, and basically wanted it taken down. Some of our fanbase was up in arms over it, claiming it represents heritage, not hate. Maybe it represents heritage, but too many people look at it and immediately associate bad things with it.

The CSA was, IIRC, the only nation-state that was a stated and belligerent enemy of the US for its entire existence. The flag represents, more than anything else, violence and treason against the US.

You definitely sound like an authentic jayhawk.

It's definitely hard to look at it and draw positive heritage from it.

The three frat boys traveling in the RV from your school on the movie Borat thought differently.....

That's not his point. It's the defense I always here, but I don't think anyone here is arguing that Abe Lincoln and all the northerners were fighting for the noble cause of ridding the country of slavery.

If that is the case how can one claim the war was solely about slavery? Did you know that US Grant owned slaves? If one really studies this issue it is amazing how complex the war was. I liken it to abortion today, many people feel it is murder but it is part of the world we live in. The Federal government made a call on it (I think it should be a STATE issue, where in the Constitution does it mention anything about abortion? If not mentioned it is supposed to be up the the states...sound familiar?)
The slave issue was a way for Lincoln to bring a moral imperative into the war. This of course didn't set well in the North, where riots broke out when the battle cry went from "preserve the union" to "free the slaves".

Remember, to the victors go the spoils. They get to write the history books.

I think I would be more "offended" by bammers past, you know the whole thing about the military having to escourt a black girl to classes. I don't think any other school in the USA has the skeleton in the closet that bammer has, and it doesn't seem to stop blue chip recruits from playing for them.

The CSA wanted to seperate, that is all. They even offered to pay the Feds. It was the Feds that marched south you dolt. It was the feds that launched a reign of terror against the citizens of the South (Ever heard of the "march to the sea?" The Feds knew they were in the wrong, that is why nearly all of the Souths political officials were not even tried on grounds of treason. They even let Southern officers keep their side arms after the surrender.

I like your takes. The Old South and rebellion should not be celebrated by Ole Miss or anyone else. Anyone who argues that there were noble reasons for secession is either racist or not being honest with themselves. See below.

First, as far as writing history goes, grant did not own slaves. He lived and worked on a farm with slaves owned by a relative. He had no power to free them. The farm never made any money, and Grant was a poor man.

Why did Lincoln "need" to bring a moral imperative to the war if it just made everyone mad? Apparently, not everyone had the same reaction. There were PLENTY of abolitionists in the North that were very satisfied with this shift.

Do you really think that there would have been a Civil War w/o the institution of slavery? Absolutely not. But with slavery the war was almost unavoidable. And I am not aware of any history book censoring that went on after the Civil War. There was certainly no effort to stop dozens of authors from celebrating the antebellum south.

Sherman called it total war. He believed that it was nonsense to be in a state of war, which is horrible, and not maximize your chances of victory by destroying food supplies, railroads etc. that were the lifeline of the Rebel Army. I am glad he did what he did. Those who were holding human beings against their will, savagely beating and raping them, and separating families at livestock style auctions deserved no better.

Finally, how does the mercy shown the Confederate officers after the war prove anything about anything?

Because we're not arguing about the motives of the north. The issue is the South committed treason to protect slavery. That's why I don't understand why so many people like waving confederate flags.

Tradition and heritage are going to be a thing of the past. I hate to say this but there are people that want us to forget about the Civil War and what it was fought over and no longer fly any Confederate flags around this country or have Rebel plates on our cars. I love tradition, heritage and history. I'm one proud southerner and will always be.

I'd rather no one forgets about the Civil War; remembrance and celebration are different, though.

If somebody has some sort of confederate flag on their person, car or house how should we know if they are remembering or celebrating the past?

Why not get an Abraham Lincoln sticker?
