I really watched DY last night. When he comes upfield he runs until he is just totally out of control, he makes no cuts, he leans until his head is so far in front of his body he's on his way down ... that's why it appears he's looking to fall down .. he's really not he's just out of control.

He's been getting tackled mostly by grass blades and his own feet for too long. He is a thrifty option in the slot but not as a kick returner at D1 level.

Clueless fans!
#19 Devrin Young returned three kicks tonight and by doing so, moved into third place all-time for returning yards at UT. Young had 1,346 career return yards entering tonight's game. Only Willie Gault (1,854, 1979-82) and Leonard Scott (1,788, 1999-2002) are ahead of Young on the Vols all-time list.

I would like to know how many returns and TD's Gault and Scott had in their respective time frames. Young has never been effective. He has simply just been the guy filling the position since 2011 (excluding CP in 2012)

If I remember correctly the main reason he got the job was that he could actually catch and hold onto the ball. At the time we had NO one who could do that reliably. Maybe that's still the case, I don't know.. It would've been nice in the first two games to at least try one of our faster players back there.. Someone like Williams maybe. Now that we are into the SEC schedule it's not a good time to experiment...

I have come to the assumption that Young having so many return yards is a direct result of teams scoring in bunches and D. Young returning afterwards. So the real question would be what are his yards per attempt compared to Gault, Scott, etc??? I do think he is a good kid and really wants to make a play for his team, but c'mon man, the kid really needs to take a knee when he is ever in the end-zone.

By the way, from one former Sr DS to another, hooah battle.

I agree with your points, SDS, but I also have a great deal of faith in the coaches in knowing who and when to put back to receive the kickoffs and punts. One return for 6 and the naysayers will go away.

I think their are a few more possibilities, Carter looked good last year and the once chance he had this year returning punts. Curious as to why they dont try him.
Also he doesn't get much play in the WR rotation so the risk of injury doesnt have a huge impact on the team.

VN has been pumping him for years at RB, WR.. stats don't lie.. He is not very effective on the field. He would have not been offered by this staff out of HS.

78 returns 1854 yards (23.77 avg) 4TD's

Scott
77 returns 1788 yards (23.22 avg) 1TD's

Young

That is facts..... but it won't shut up the complaining fans.

I remember when everyone kept saying that he's going to break one soon. Now everyone knew he was a bad option from the start.

I'm glad all Tenn fans aren't this way. The complainers just come here to look for somewhere to cry and say "I told you so".

When we recruited Young it was "He will never make it in the SEC. blah blah blah"

His first punt return he almost housed and it was "I was totally wrong, he is the man for the job."

Now he's doing exactly what we expected of him. Be a consistent kick off returner with no/little ball security issues. His only flaw, and it is a big one. He needs to learn to take a knee when he's in the end zone.

However this far from a "failed experiment" like so many have posted on here.

I love the direction this team is headed, and I am pleased with our play all over the field so far this season. Obviously the O-Line needs work, and this growth is going to come with experience... but the ONE thing that we can change right now is Devrin Young returning kickoffs. For the love of Tennessee, Butch, please put someone else back there.

Well, Gault and Scott were literally World Class sprinters so were a bigger threat to go the distance on any given return but as a matter of yardage per return Young is right there with the best we've had.

He DOES, I think, need to be more prudent about kicks coming out of the endzone.

Also I'm surprised no one mentioned Oklahoma's kicker, who is easily an NFL prospect. He was smashing all of his kicks passed the end zone, I wouldn't be surprised if Coaches told Devrin to try and get whatever field position he could.

Just some thoughts
