The DNC convention thread -- all things convention go here

Presidential elections should always be about policy. Unfortunately, they are not about policy all the time.

Dems should have more of a policy platform but I don't think it will come down to policy. Dems will be very empathetic to covid, BLM, ect.

Trump being trump makes it hard for moderate Republicans to support him.
It’s never about policy or about trump.... it is about winning and power...

I am not arguing. I guess I am just working from the preconceived notions from civic classes, which may not be what's in practice.
Sorry, wasn’t trying to be combative. Just comes naturally I guess.

My intuition or just generic reading of the 14th amendment would lead to the same result as yours. The real kicker is that it isn’t even the privileges and immunities clause that is Relied upon for incorporation. It seems like an overly dogmatic area of law.

I have made my stances known, individual rights above society or government rights or powers, unless specified by the Consititution. Things that restrict an individuals right(s) are generally wrong in my book.

In this case I was surprised to hear about the incorporation aspect which is why I was asking about it

Can’t wait to see the highest paid person at CNN speak at the RNC. You know....that Sandmann kid. Gonna be epic. Hope he comes out, ask where’s the CNN cameras and say “thanks”.

Just imagine Sandmann speaking to a packed Republican convention arena!

And I think you’re completely wrong. Not a single establishment candidate was effective enough to ignite the GOP base. Not one. That’s on the candidates and party not the voters.

And we see the exact same situation across the aisle with the 💩 ticket the Democrats are offering. DC is completely out of touch with Main Street across party lines.

You completely agreed with my point. "Not a single establishment candidate was effective enough to ignite the GOP base.

Trump had 3 opponents Cruz, Rubio and Kasich. 3 of those 4 are establishment candidates on various points on the spectrum.

Trump earned 44% of the popular vote in the primary, which is not even half, much less "igniting the base." Most primaries are narrowed down to 2 candidates. So, combining the votes for kasich, Cruz and Rubio means a 52 to 44 loss for trump. (4% voted other)Screenshot_20200818-161421_Chrome.jpg

I remembered it the way you do but, objectively, that’s a pretty slim margin when you consider that some of those voters would have had Trump as a second choice.

Not buying it you’re just splitting hairs on “single”. Oh and there were like 16 candidates in the field not three establishment candidates. The Democrats did exactly the same thing this time. Bloomberg was a superior candidate to Trump with similar business backgrounds and successes yet he couldn’t get traction within the party as the voters as a whole were not fed up with the establishment candidates yet. Bloomberg was the best Democrat offered this time hands down. And I’d put Tulsi as number 2 and she was more establishment bound too. No way I vote for either of them due to political differences. But they were both strong candidates. The rest were/are 💩 candidates. And I’m the end they chose a 💩 ticket.

The GOP voter base was DONE with the establishment base offerings. And a trash candidate like Trump beat them all. Yeah that’s completely different than what you are offering because the voters are fed up with the establishment.

I didn’t vote for a Trump last time. But I will this time. Because as lousy as he is as a human being I think he’s been rather effective in spite of Congress. Yeah I know you’ll disagree. Oh well.

The fact that a reality TV Star was able to defeat the entire GOP establishment field is a pretty damning indictment against what the GOP voters think of their party leadership and candidate pool in my opinion.

Also shows how deep their policy convictions run

It’s pretty damning of GOP voters, IMO. Trump is who we thought he was. I can see people thinking he might grow into the role, but it’s not surprising to anyone that he spends more time fighting battles that appease his own vanity more than he spends doing the people’s work.

Not a single candidate were your words not mine.

I doubt it will make your day but I agree with you on Tulsi G. Two thumbs up emogee.

We’ll disagree. Sounds like you and PJ want to condemn the voters for not buying the **** candidates forced upon them. That isn’t their fault it’s the party’s fault for taking them for granted.

And again policy wise I don’t have a problem with Trump. He’s done better than I imagined he ever could. He is probably worse as a human being than I thought he was. I just don’t care.
