Then why do professional sports bother making these teams play games at the end of the season with zero playoff implications whenever they have been mathematically eliminated for weeks?

The teams are obligated to a X amount of games every year, whether they're in contention or not. Plus if they have been eliminated for weeks the effort on their part is crap.
