The End of the Bruce Pearl Era.

The SC coach did not outcoach Pearl. Pearl did not coach a bad game against SC. The Vols' shots hit iron. Period. When you're not comfortable shooting and you're too disheartened to rebound, you lose basketball games. Someone shooting with some confidence and getting hot keeps us in the game. What specifically did Pearl do to coach a bad game? Shots wouldn't fall. UT's chemistry is such that when they are not getting shots to fall in their half court office ... they wilt. Hopefully we don't have anymore games like that. Pearl can instill confidence.

I think it was just pure laziness. Everyone was sleepwalking through the game. No hustle, no desire. Nada

awww... poor sweet little boys... my heart just breaks that they were just to sad to rebound or play defense. :cray:

there was no excuse for the way the team played. We shouldn't even be ranked next week. Who besides CBP thinks Tyler Smith is going to play in the NBA?
you come back for senior season to put up giant numbers and win his numbers are pathetic and we lost to usc by 22 ,coach dont worry who you hurt sit some people

the point of this thread is not "Fire Bruce Pearl today."

I was a HUGE Pearl supporter when he first got here. I LOVED HIS PASSION, POSITIVITY, AND HIS OVERALL ENERGY........ AND HIS FAST PACED PRESSURE STYLE! i would love nothing more for our team to start playing with the same energy, discipline and IQ as.... lofton, jajuan, dane, ramar, howell, chism, patterson, wingate, watson.... did. (which wasn't much but it was enough).

unfortunately, i have watched how his teams fade in february and march. and now i am watching a team he's coached for 2 years.... some of the guys have been here 3+ years. when it comes to X's and O's...this team looks like they practiced together for about a week. when it comes to effort, energy, discipline, playing as a team, playing defense, rebounding, shot selection... they fail. they beat teams with talent and number of players. they get beat when the other team equals them in either talent or is better disciplined.

bruce will last through this year of course. and probably last through next year.... he may be here 2 more full seaons after this year. but this pathetic group of underachievers proves he can't coach. he cannot take us to the next level as a coach.

maybe we can pay him 2.6 million to be head cheerleader... paint himself up in orange and sit with the students, give speeches on campus, and pump up boosters and alumni.[/QUOTE

Great Post! Are you through crying yet???? Your Lets fire Pearl just like how we fired Jerry Green philosophy doesnt add up. I tell you what, lets wait until after Memphis or better yet lets see what they do in the post season. As long as Pearl is consistently making it to the NCAA and in the hunt for the east championship (not actually having to win the east every single year) then I am happy. I have lived through the Wade Houston, Kevin O'Neill and Buzz Peterson years. I am sorry he lost a basketball game, but it happens. Get over it. Your lucky to have him and there are much better basketball schools that would love to have him (i.e.-Memphis).

What did Green sell? He brought in a few good players (Haislip, Slay, Higgins), but he basically played with O'Neill's players (Wharton, Black, Victor, Harris). And you could easily argue Yarbrough b/c O'Neill brought in his brother, Del Baker. We had some success under Green, but he didn't sell jack to the fans or the boosters except W's.
uh that was my point ...Green couldn't sell the same product! jeezus!

it's not about 1 game genius.

you football fans have such mediocre expectations for your basketball team.

Let's get this out of the way quick. I do not hate Pearl. I hate the way we have played flat the past 5 games. It's been a trend downward since he got his players in here. They've got no heart, no fight, no desire to rebound or play defense. I hate that our best rebounder is out on the perimeter thinking he's the reincarnation of Ray Allen shooting all those 3's. Apparently, it's part of the gameplan to have him on the perimeter or he wouldn't be out there so much. What you are replying to is your genius statement that a half court offense is limited to "6'4" fat guys". Well golly, who would have thought those darn short fat guys could have laid the smack down on us by 20. Pearl takes us to the tournament yearly, and apparently he and everyone else is fine with just making it there. Ok, be complacent. I've had a taste of winning with hard-nosed players like Lofton and the Smiths and Major Wingate and I want more. That's what happens when you start winning, expectations rise.

The point is, there isnt a coach that will do that to the UT program, other than pearl. You dont know whether or not he can bring a title here anyway, so get used to pearl or stop being a fan. Simple as that. Also, why are you so mean on all your posts? Whats up with you making fun of a person that never played basketball or whatever, while he was just trying to be funny? All of your posts are mean spirited and you take jabs at everyone. Stop that, there isnt much room for that on this site.

He wasn't trying to be funny. Around September, he was legitimately lying saying that he was a basketball player at UTM. There was no joking about it. Also I will continue to support the UT program as I have since I was 12 whether or not I support how Pearl is coaching.

Replace Pearl with the name Fulmer and you get pretty much what Fulmerites said for years. Look how that ended up.

O.k. since you seem to think your an expert. Let's look at the facts of what CBP has done since he has been here:

During CBP's tenure UT has 24.5 wins per season, made the tournament 4 straight years -reaching the sweet 16 twice.

UT has won 1 outright SEC Championship, 3 SEC East Division Titles, and won more SEC games than an other school. Oh yeah, and I almost forgot to mention we were ranked #1 at one point also which has never happened in the history of UT Basketball.

Not to mention we have consistently played one of the toughest schedules in college basketball each year.

CBP has taken an arena where the University put up curtains because they couldnt get enough people to attend games and made it the fourth most attended basketball program in the country (consistently). Lastly, All but one of UT's games are on Television this year. When has that ever happened before? Television exposure equals big time recruits.

I am sick of cry babies like yourself who have never played bball calling for CBP's job over one loss. I am pissed they lost to USC and I will also say I am a little concerned that the team hasnt put two half's together this season. But, I am not so ignorant as you are to call for CBP's job based on the facts above. People like yourself need to step back take a look at the body of work Pearl has accomplished and judge him at the end of each season. So far he has four great seasons and we dont know how this one is going to turn out. So sit down and shut up.

I still predict CBP will leave UT for a better job at some point in the next few years.

that last sentence is the best.

i played in HS and college (on scholarship) and i'm quite sure i'd smoke you left handed (i'm right randed).

i will not deny that pearl has accomplished some things and without a doubt has re-energized the program in a way we haven't seen... maybe ever.

the point is... he cannot coach. if UT wants an elite b-ball program (which most slackers here say is impossible but it appears mike hamilton doesn't think its impossible... since he's paying for it with elite salary and delivering brand new top notch facilities) they need a coach who can coach.

pearl has said... "i can't get this team to train." " i can't get this team to press how i want." "i don't want to coach effort." ALL COMPLETELY ABSURD COMMENTS FOR A COACH TO SAY, ADMIT, OR EVEN THINK. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW SOMEONE WHO'S KNOWN FOR BEING A MOTIVATOR (MORE SO THAN AN X'S AND O'S COACH) CAN ADMIT SUCH A THING? DOES BOB KNIGHT SAY THAT? COACH K, ROY, SELF, PITINO, ... I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW ABSURD THAT MENTALITY IS FOR ANY 2.6 MILLION DOLLAR LEADER. even so... there's more....

lofton, jujuan, dane were the heart of pearls success. those guys didn't need much coaching or pushing. lofton's work ethic is widely known as epic and made jujuan a better player. dane said himself he'd spend hours watching film. you tell me how it's possible dane and lofton are better in a full court press than 7/9 of our top players.

pearl has no clue how to teach a half court offense. his deficiency is this area was largely looked over cuz lofton (and then jujuan his sr. year) would shoot incredibly from 3. pearls ineptitude in this area is quite obvious and been covered over and over here. you cannot be an elite program without at least average profiency in the half court.

so... he can't get his players that he recruited to play the intense, tenacious, pressing defense that is signature of the "pearl style". he has admitted it. they don't play any d in the half court either... just ask belmont, ok state, temple, jodie meeks, wyoming, and USC. no defense + no offense = no coaching, no final fours, no National Championships.

last season and this season is what you get with pearl. pearl will never take any program to elite status. he's been a needed energizer to the program there is no doubt... a stepping stone. UT has proven they will pay for elite status in their men's bball program. it's no longer a career killer. hopefully, mike hamiliton will not be afraid to make a change in the next couple years... unfortunately its unrealistic to think he'd do it any sooner.

Again, his record speaks for itself. Keep calling in on the local radio shows and giving your opinion because all the rest of us love a good laugh. Also, playing at a Jr. College or Carson Newman on scholarship doesnt mean you know basketball (or really that you are even a decent ball player). Trust me if I was armless with no feet I am very confident I would beat you like a drum in bball. Do me a favor dont ever donate over 500K to UT. Why you may ask? I am afraid if you start donating that kind of cash to UT someone may actually start to listen to your emotionally based reasons to get rid of Pearl, which is reminiscent of what happened to DeVoe. Then I will have to endure the likes of Wade Houston, Kevin O'Neill, and Buzz Peterson again.

Yeah, because DeVoe's termination was totally uncalled for. His last five years were the portrait of excellence. We get it. You have no standards. As long as UT isn't Auburn, people like you are satisfied.

Oh, I can tell you really follow bball. Lets see......where were you last year????????? Do you remember Memphis being interested in him? It was his if he wanted the job. or How about a couple of years ago when his name was mentioned with the Indiana vacancy? And no this isnt a Fan club manifesto, its facts and figures not emotional b.s. following a disappointing loss.

Is this a joke? The chances of him getting that job was the about the same as the other bogus rumors of him going to Orlando to replace Van Gundy.

Yeah its a joke just like your avatar. Go back to Bristol.

You got me.

Great way to defend your answer. I actually like Coach Pearl, but since last season he's started to slip a little bit. Eventually, it could continue to regress and that's when we'll have a problem. He's shown that he's not capable of recruiting a competent point guard and he hasn't been able to produce a half court game. These are not troubles that have just came up over night.

Bragging about the number of wins is what kept Fulmer around for a decade too long. Coaches are paid to win Championships.

UT has won 1 outright SEC Championship, 3 SEC East Division Titles, and won more SEC games than an other school. Oh yeah, and I almost forgot to mention we were ranked #1 at one point also which has never happened in the history of UT Basketball.

What does an SEC East Title look like and how long do you hang your hat on being #1 for 24 hours?

Not to mention we have consistently played one of the toughest schedules in college basketball each year.

Which should prepare us for deep tourney runs. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

CBP has taken an arena where the University put up curtains because they couldnt get enough people to attend games and made it the fourth most attended basketball program in the country (consistently). Lastly, All but one of UT's games are on Television this year. When has that ever happened before? Television exposure equals big time recruits.

All of that is great and I wish him nothing but more success. I just don’t understand why he does not address deficiencies/weaknesses that are obvious even to the casual basketball fan.

I am sick of cry babies like yourself who have never played bball calling for CBP's job over one loss. You are being whiny and melodramatic. Criticism of his methods and calls for improvement do not equal calling for his job.

People like yourself need to step back take a look at the body of work Pearl has accomplished and judge him at the end of each season. So far he has four great seasons and we dont know how this one is going to turn out. So sit down and shut up.

Are you kidding me? really. He just got a commitment from a five star recruit at point gaurd. ....... Again stick to racing.
