The eternal QB debate (merged)

A lot of it has to do with WKU. Ohio also helps. 0tds 5ints and like approximately 50% against UCLA/Florida pretty much tells the story.

By those rules I guess you have to leave out Wyoming when thinking about Stephens.
I mean it was Wyoming. Who counts stats against Wyoming?

If crompton is so screwed up in the head, where do you think Nick Stephens is?You know this kid(N.S.) has to be thinking, how could I possibly do any worse?

How is it on the coach's shoulders? He inherited an untenable QB situation. He has no option but to play someone. I don't understand why we're staying with this, but this debacle rests squarely on the plate of CBS' newest former coach commentator.

You may want to re-check your stats...

UCLA stats:
Rushing Defense: T-9th in NCAA, 2nd in Pac-10 (74.33)
Pass Effiency Defense: 4th in NCAA, 1st in Pac-10 (82.23)
Total Defense: 15th in NCAA, 3rd in Pac-10 (251.00)
Scoring Defense: 12th in NCAA, 3rd in Pac-10 (12.67)

UCLA's Schedule:

San Diego State
Tennessee
Kansas State

Not exactly the most prolific passing offenses in the nation. Next useless stat, please.

I love this thread. The original poster says that we shouldn't bash Crompton if we can't post stats that prove that Crompton is a horrid QB. Then when people post stats that prove that Crompton is a once-in-a-lifetime horrible QB, the original poster changes to saying that we shouldn't bash Crompton because bashing Crompton won't make him any better.

Just think how great UCLA's defensive stats against the pass would have looked had they not had to play San Diego State! We're talking #1 in the Nation!

Well I didn't say Stephens is good or anything about Stephens at all. Fact is that any mediocre quarterback with the talent Tennessee has can put up those numbers against Ohio and WKU. A mediocre quarterback would put up better numbers because Crompton is well below mediocre. Odds are a lot of those guys behind Crompton on the list play for schools like Troy and are playing teams like Florida. It's hard for them to pad stats against poor competition when they are the poor competition and playing against power houses.

Looked it up and Troy's quarterback was 8 of 24 for 66yards and 1int against. Crompton threw 2 ints against Florida and he has far more talent around him than Troy's QB. The Western Kentucky game did a lot to make Crompton's numbers look better. WKU may be the worst FBS team in the country. They did lose to Central Arkansas 28-7 so....

stats do not always tell the story....WATCH THE GAME and the rhythm of our offense and the playcalling that we must utilize to protect JC

I respect the coaches decision to stay with crompton. am I happy with our QB play. NO, but Im also not the coach. Crompton is a fighter and hasnt quit, hes still out there still playing and trying. I have to respect the coaches decision on who to play. I do know this. Noone likes losing, the fans, the players or the coaches. They will play the players they think can win. We must support the decision and the players. Nothing is sadder to me than fans booing a college athelete They are not paid professional players ( except maybe in alabama ) . Yes we want to be back on top but these coaches just got here. I see a bright future for the Big Orange. Im willing to be a little patient. GO VOLS

he doesn't quit because, in his mind, he's a perfectly effective college qb!! Have we ever heard crompton say that he's had a poor game, or that he and the passing game need to get better! No! Never! He thinks throwing 2/3 ints a game, with 80 yards passing, is perfectly fine--he's sort of said this once or twice. He's never taken responsibility for having a lousy game. In his own mind, he's an all america every week! He overthrows a wide open receiver--and then goes down the field and pats the wr on the shoulder as if the wr were to blame for the missed connection. Sometimes, of course, our wrs are to blame--but crompton seems rather oblivious to everything--including the fact that our passing attack consists of throwing to backs--and maybe, at this stage of his star-crossed career, that is helping him a little bit. We should stop talking about him as kiffin has dug in his heels with him--why, i don't know--and that's that.

go to he11 !!!!!!

I think Ohio's pass defense is not horrible and compares reasonably well to an SEC caliber pass defense (low end). Crompton did get better but could not have gotten much worse. I anticipate a VERY heavy run scheme against Auburn and a Vols win.

Yeah I agree with ya. #1 in the country for interceptions is all the stats i need to see. 200 yards on Ohio is nothing to brag about. Crompton should at least of had over 300 on them. Didn't one of his interceptions cause a TD, yeah another good stat to look at.

For the person who started this thread. let Crompton beat Auburn then we might have some light to look at but until then all I see is the same Crompton from last year.

Keep in mind that Auburn is ranked 82 in rushing defense. This despite playing a very weak schedule and being ahead in many of their games.

Although crompton's stats are terrible (8 picks, 3 tds? how is that good?), a lot of his mistakes dont show up in the numbers. That fumble vs. ohio that was called back was the moment i gave up on jc. In the stats, it was just a sack, but in the minds of fans it was just one example of a guy making the WORST possible decisions.

You have to use your eyes. How bout overthrowing a wiiiide open receiver for a td vs. ohio? Or throwing behind florida's bench when there was absolutely no pressure? These terrible plays dont show up in stats, but we can't unsee them.

Even though the stats have favored the d over the years, its hard to overlook their inability to get off the field on 3rd down.

It's a lot better this year than last.

It goes hand in hand with an offense that only gets them three plays rest before heading back out to the field of play. You can only expect so much out of guys playing 40 minutes.

For the Cromptonites:

Sadly I am starting to think our best QB is on the field. Initially I didnt believe JC could possibly be better than NS, however, after as bad as he has played, why else would Kiffin not want to put in NS. He definitely wants to win and he has had 10 months to evaluate both players, and he still refuses to put NS in. All I can figure is that he must know something we dont.

This!!!! If there was a better solution then CLK would have him in the game already....I'd be willing to bet that CLK and all his staff have a really good laugh if they ever get on here and read what the "arm-chair" coaches have to say about everything...LoL...I know I find it quite comical at times!

I :mf_surrender: if he is what Kiffin thinks is best then I am with him....now GO VOLS! :pepper: and kick some tiger :censored:

and the funny thing is... i would take almost everyone of those qb's over ours. here is the real question... how many int's will crompton have by the end of the season? my guess: > 20
