The Fishing Thread

Old Hickory Lake---- 76 surface temp, Water- stained , Air temp 88 degrees, light wind out of the northeast..........Got the boat back, two hours into my 5 hour break in period. It's hard to put a lot of run time on these motors and i truly hate running all over the lake varying rpm from 2500 to 4500, pain in the butt. Anyway got about a hour on her today.

About the fishing. Folks it's time to get the bluegill crankbaits out. I fished docks all day. Caught several keeper crappie on a bandit 200 bluegill pattern, caught a few bass too on the same bait. Got into another large school of white bass and probably could have stayed with them and caught a mess, but i moved off of them in search of largemouth. Fish are scattered and still surprisingly shallow, most largemouth bites in 3-6 foot of water.

Caught two good keepers on a C-rig, but that's some painfully slow fishing.

I'll be back out tomorrow evening on the same lake except i'll be on the lower third this time. More places to hide from the sun down there. Going to get after the crappie under some of those deeper docks, catch a mess and fire up the grill this weekend.

Old Hickory Lake------------- Got out for a few hours today, Cedar creek area. Wore them out on a crankbait for a hour or so. Would have had about 13 or 14 pounds best 5 largemouth. Caught a lot of stripe and white bass also.

All fish came in one 100 yard stretch of ledge between 4 and 16 foot deep. Most fish right on the ledge itself.

Had a blast, it's hot but the bite was too.

Water temp was about 78 degrees

Water Clarity- stained

Wind 10-20 mph out of the west.

Sucks that he wasn't familiar with the protocol for qualifying as a world record. Not sure I would know either.

Has to be weighed on a set of certified scales and documented by a local official, probably TWRA or someone like that.

If I caught a stripper that big, I would damn sure find out what the protocol is, weigh it, confirm it, and throw it back to live some more. I'm sure that would end up negating it being a record if it was thrown back, but cest la vie.

It would probably die before or shortly after release. It would be pointless to release it.

How do you figure?

Being handled outside of the water for the amount of time to properly do everything and get all the pics you would want. I remember hearing a statistic, wish I remember where, that x% of fish die when handled x amount of time out of water.

You just gotta keep them stable for a bit, until they get a good tail kick. Length, girth, weight, and a few pics shouldnt be more than 1 minute anyhow.

Never know with an old fish like that what it can handle though. Also you have to think how they got it in, not every boat is going to have a livewell that is big enough to hold a fish like that.

Go shallow and stay there, cover as much water and standing grass as you can. Early morning fish the edge, later, fish towards the back of the thickest stuff. You'll need heavy line for this.

Time to learn. Buddy of mine and I used to make our own flies in high school, loved fly fishing when I was young and my parents paid for it. lol. Expensive hobby, but great fun.

Got out on Old Hickory for a few yesterday. Old boat has had the motor rebuilt this year and to top it off the lower unit exploded, been one of those years.

Well the fishing wasn't quite as bad overall. Found a nice little shallow pattern on a swim jig. Caught a few good ones off wood close to the main river channel. If you want numbers right now there's only one thing to do, move and do it often. Find a spot, catch a couple, let it rest. Come back later if you don't find more stuff like it, in short it's a grind to fill a limit right now.

Water temp 84, sunny and light wind out of the North.
Water-Stained

Fall is coming and they'll start stacking up in the backs of creeks, game on when that happens. Still too hot yet for that though.
