Ok. So nope it is somewhat inferior from a technology standpoint. Solar cells are photovoltaic cells. They convert photons to Direct Current, DC. Edison lost the fight a little over a hundred years ago (thank God) and our power distribution system is Alternating Current, AC. In its raw form solar panel energy is useless to your home or the power grid. Going from DC to AC requires much finer control and is no where near as efficient as going from AC to DC. Especially if you’re going to attach to the power grid and source power. Then you have to phase lock to the local grid. All of this requires control equipment which requires money. And unless you have local storage capacity then you still have to have the local power grid when you need more energy than you can make if you can make energy at all (night time anybody)? You can’t store AC power. You store it in batteries, IE DC.So before I reply are you asking about the technology differences? IE can you just take solar power as generated and run your house or source to the grid with the excess?

He’s right as far as Im concerned for a residential user it’s a gimmick. My socialist wife brings it up from time to time and is promptly shut down with a technical explanation of why it makes no sense for residential power generation without heavy government subsidies. And that’s stupid.
It’s great for the power company. It’s free capacity. You make peak power during the middle of the day when most people aren’t home. It’s lousy for the homeowner.
If you don’t like money sure... it’s a lifestyle choice. Like an electric car. Nothing more nothing less.I haven't crunched numbers but I assume you're right since most new homes don't have solar generation.
Still, it has its place in the generation mix.
All the doom and gloom predictions from our resident economists are pretty amusing. Yet for over two years now not one peep about the double barrel shotgun pointed at our heads in the form of IMO 2020 and the potential economic ruin and loss of jobs it will/could bring. If y'all were in the least bit concerned about the global economy and the pain these tariffs will cause Americans you would have been up in arms over this one.
Deflection. IMO 2020 has absolutely nothing to do with where we should stand on trade policy.
You call us "doom and gloom economists" and then fearmonger with the "double barrel shotgun" comment in the same breath.
What if we're consistently against both forms of intrusive and overbearing regulation? What then?
I hadn't heard of IMO 2020. Interesting.
