The Foreign Trade Thread

It seems no amount of facts, evidence, or economic wisdom is going to convince you that your position on trade is wrong.

You're saying the tariffs couldn't have cost Ford $1B in the last year? Ford had $156B in costs in 2018. How clueless do you have to be about business and economics to think a year of tariff hikes on inputs couldn't cost them $1B. That's not even 1% of their costs.

Increased production costs are negligible and didn’t cause the problem. To blame their problems entirely upon tariffs is disingenuous at best.

What does that have to do with what Canada is doing? What are the tariffs accomplishing against Canada now?

It’s called the USMCA which replaces nafta, it has yet to be ratified by congress so I would assume that’s why tariffs are in play, they’ve been ****ing our dairy farmers for quite some time with their own tariffs

We are 3 times the economic power China is. We account for 20 percent of their exports.

We can't allow them to match us, or pass us. Now is the time to negotiate, we have the leverage. Waiting is a disaster.

They have all gone full-blown retard in for a penny in for a pound . I can’t wait to see what this new special prosecutor turns up!

They're not negotiating now. The deal has been written. You can no longer say the tariff is a negotiating tactic. It remains because Trump is a protectionist.

Good. America has needed a president to look out for her concerns for decades

What part of it hasn't been ratified don’t you get ?

What is Canada, whose steel is being taxed, supposed to do about U.S. Congress ratifying the agreement.

In fact, the tariffs are slowing down ratification.

Grassley: Trump's new trade deal still stuck over tariffs

Senate Finance Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said Monday that the president once again refused to lift steel and aluminum tariffs on U.S. allies when pressed, a requirement that Grassley has laid out to consider the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement to replace NAFTA.

When a company only profits $3.6B in a fiscal year, a $1B increase in costs is not negligible. That's over 20% of profit eaten up. $1B is the equivalent of 1,100 jobs paying $60k over the next ten years. Does that sound negligible to you? You have no idea what you're talking about.

Ford has created some of their own problems, but this has to be factored before you enact tariffs. Companies that suffer from tariffs have different levels of health, and they are hit by tariffs to varying degrees. Policy makers/economists are aware of this and it's ignored by idiots who think trade wars are easy to win. You're not telling anybody anything new by saying Ford isn't completely healthy. We knew this. Everybody knows Detroit is upside down with pensions. One of the reasons tariffs are so detrimental is because they push companies that are on/near the margin over the margin, and they have to tighten their belts and adjust.

Look, go read the article by Pat Buchanan on drudge, your contention is that the tariffs are the root cause of their losses, I disagree with that premise. Slumping sales and fiscal irresponsibility play into their woes not tariffs. Go read that article and get back to me. FWIW even that liberal nut job Tom Friedman agrees with Trumps stance on tariffs, see the NYT article in today’s edition. 👍

Are you arguing that the tariffs haven't cost them $1B?

Thomas Friedman is an idiot. He's just a journalist. He's not a policy wonk or an economist. Pat Buchanan is a pretty good political figure, as far as they go, but he's been wrong about this topic for decades. It's why my Dad, a labor economist, wouldn't support him for POTUS in the 90's. My Dad supports/voted for Trump and he says Trump is wrong on trade. Does "orange man bad" explain that one?

You and your dad are both wrong, obviously you didn’t read either article No I don’t believe the tariffs cost them shlt either, they weren’t even implemented until the latter part of 2018

You just make up whatever reality you want, so there is no use discussing anything with you.
