The Golf Thread

TAIII's son is one of the more interesting people I've ever met. I will just leave it at that.

Holmes choked. Oh well...
It was a little bit of a choke, but I can't imagine a more difficult shot to have to step up and hit after a 3 hour layoff than that drive on 18. That hole was playing insanely difficult.

Should have hit a few more drives before the playoff
I was listening on satellite, and he was on the putting green for about an hour prior to the playoff, and right before Casey's approach in regulation, Mark Carnival, says Holmes better go hit a few more drives, turns out it would have been a good idea

I understand that it is Johnny Miller's schtick to be kind of an overanalytical jerk, but did anybody see his coverage of Couples' fat chip on 13 (when he was in the thick of contention?) The guy steps up to a chip just above the bunker on an uphill lie and chunked it a bit, turning a birdy opportunity into a par, giving away a stroke that would have put him in the thick of things.

I know that shot. I've got that shot in my bag. It's called the uphill flub, and is closely associated with the dowhill skulll. It doesn't take 15 minutes of airtime and 21 replays to explain, and I seriously doubt that any pro could actually get it up and down 19 out of 20 times, as Miller claimed. He also completely ignored the previous fairway wood that Couples lost right from the middle of the fairway that gave him the opportunity for the "Cotton Duff" in the first place.

I'll admit that Miller does, at times, add something to a broadcast tradition that is sometimes errs too much on the side of protocol, but sometimes the guy just makes me want to pull his hair.

It's hard to believe they can make golf compelling on the radio, but they pull it off.

I listen to keep up with what's going on sometimes, but I wouldn't call it compelling.

The events are often compelling; listening to a radio broadcast of a putt is somewhat akin to watching paint dry.

Miller is a jerk. Always has been, always will be. It was amusing when he and Maltbie got into it a little bit over who the best player in the world was at Doral. Neither one of them backed down, really.

Miller doesn't bother me. He's just brutally honest. He comes at it from the perspective of a guy who once had every shot in the bag.

Agreed, 100%. Perhaps the perspective of a guy who should have won about five more majors than he did, and that eats at him on a daily basis, so he's got a bit of a chip on his shoulder. But the guy knows golf, backwards, forwards, inside and out, no question about it.

I like the interaction between the commentators, and the stories they do on the golfers

everyone should have won more in the debate about the greats (save Tiger), but for a period of about 3-5 years, Miller was the best player in the world, hands down.

I could stand that, but he knows that "brutal honesty" is his thing, so he plays it up into overcriticism, in my opinion.

The average pro hits what, 60% of fairways? Missing one on the back in contention isn't always a choke. Making bogey on the par 4 18th that is averaging 5.2 shots for the field isn't necessarily because Paul Casey's "mouth is dry."

There is a fine line between honesty and criticism that might not be fair. He has as much difficulty toeing that line as everybody else, just from the opposite side.

My Masters connection came through. I'll be at Augusta National bright and early in the morning. :good!:
